OneNote not synching and seems to have lost all my notes

Had a forced Office update (dogfood I guess) to 2016 yesterday. When I tried to open OneNote after all the Office apps shut down for the update it kept demanding email login info, even though my Skype and Outlook came back--not quite the same but at least all the contact info seems to be there--without requiring a login. It said my standard Microsoft work address wouldn't work 'cause it belongs to a company. I tried a couple other email addresses and passwords but no joy. I didn't know OneNote was independently secured. If I did know it was probably years ago. If I have the right email address it's in OneNote (stupid irony).

I tried pulling the backups (click File, and then click Open Backups), but there's nothing there, just a couple of Quick Notes default pages, which are empty. Does that mean everything's gone?

As part of trying to recover the notebook, I somehow I moved my notebook (with the dozen or so pages) to the Misplaced Sections. It also shows just a bunch of default pages that are empty. It says it can't sync some changes in the section 'cause the file was moved or deleted. When I check the History, all I get, even for six months of recent edits, is a couple of untitled, blank pages.

Is there anything else to try, any other places to pull backups from? I don't know why all the backups disappeared with the access. Why does OneNote require access that even Outlook doesn't? Have there been problems with updating OneNote in  upgrade to Office 2016?

Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I am sorry to know that after upgrading to Office 2016 you seem to have lost access to all OneNote files.

OneNote generally saves notebooks on OneDrive. Check if you are logged into OneDrive after upgrade to Office 2016. In OneNote click on File > Open > OneDrive > Sign-In. Check if you are able to sign-in this way to OneDrive using your Microsoft Account and see if you can recover all your missing notebooks.

Try the above step and let us know the result.

Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I click Open it shows two OneDrive accounts, one labelled Microsoft (with my work alias), the other personal (with a personal email account). Neither has the old notebook. I signed out and back in again; that didn't change anything. The notebook I just created, as part of starting to recover my procedures and meeting notes and to do list, is there, under personal; I'm not sure how I put it there. I checked all the  folders in both accounts, only the new notebook appears.

ME TOO!! It's too stressful and I need help ASAP... I also lost all my notebooks and all I manage to find are some empty built-in quick notes and not even half of one of my notebooks. What can I do?!?!?!?!?

is it that you can not open the onenote notebook (can not find it) or is it that the notebook is empty?

A little bit of both. When I turned on my computer I went directly to OneNote as I usually do. However, this time there was a sign that read "there was an error signing you in" and then it closed by itslef. The second time I opened it, everything was gone. I tried syncing it and all I could get back was not even half of one of my notebooks (the one that I use on a daily basis) with only up to what I edited on September 2015, as if only that was saved.... which was not much since I had started it on August. All my other notebooks are gone and all I have now is that unfinished notebook with weird blue lines that say my name and empty Quick Notes that I believe are built in because their titles are "Welcome to OneNote" or something like that... I am very worried, and I believe it has something to do with the 2016 update.... which I don't recall updating but my computer updates automatically..Please help me.

And you saved everything on OneDrive right?

If so, close your open notebooks.

Open internet explorer in in-privatr or google chrome in incognito mode.

Go to http://onenote.com

You should now se all the notebooks that are stored on onedrive. If you do not see it, it might have been lost

If you do not do it now, it will never be done

Yeah... that didn't work.. I guess OneNote is **** and just deleted all my important stuff. I now see why people prefer apple Macs instead...

I guess from your response that when you logged in there were no notebooks?

I have the same problem. When I log into onedrive all my content is there, but it's no longer appearing in the Windows app. I need to use this as it syncs with Tasks in Outlook: no OneNote Windows, no way to set reminders.

I have checked \Documents\OneNote Notebooks and the only folder in there is for a notebook I closed months ago -and even that contains no files.

Help please.

Same problem here.  Solved for me with the following:

  1. In OneNote desktop app go to File > Info.
  2. Select Settings > Properties for the problem notebook.
  3. In the "Notebook Properties" dialog box click the "Change Location" button.
  4. In the "Choose a sync location for this remote notebook" dialog box go up two folder levels, select "Documents" then select the folder containing your notebook.
  5. Click the "Select" button then click the "OK" button.

It seems the path contained "^." before the Documents folder name.

Everything seems fine now.  Hope this helps.
