Reset your password for global administrator account, in O365

If you are a user, and you can’t login to your O365 account then you should address this matter to your company/global administrator, he can reset the password for you.

If you are a global administrator and for some reason you can’t access your account, then – either you ask another global admin to reset your account password, either – you can reset the password yourself by clicking Can’t access my account link, choose work or school account,

this will take you to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/ where you can reset your password.

Before going forward, it’s important to know, that you will need the access to the alternate email and the phone number you put when you created this account.

Now, you are on the password reset page, just put your account name in account field, type the captcha code and hit NEXT.

At this point, you must choose a contact method that will be used for verification. Can be your alternate mail or phone.

 a security code will be sent to your alternate email address, or to your phone, depending on the option you selected. Paste the code in the field hit next and you can reset your password.

Some of the accounts can have additional security options, case in which, you will get addition security verification. Meaning that, after first step verification, let’s say you received a security code by email, you pasted it and hit next, another security code will be sent to your phone (or you can choose to be called) and after confirming that also, you will be redirected to the reset password page.

The steps are easy and clear, but the most important part is to have your Admin details up to date, otherwise none of the above will work and you should call Microsoft support for help.

My strong recommendations are:

1. Verify periodically that your global admin account details are up to date (both – phone and alternate email)
2. Have an extra admin account. You can create a global admin account without assigning any license. You can still access the tenant with this account and perform all the admin tasks with it.
