Searching through registry takes forever after November Windows 10 update and results in a crash.

Recently i've updated my Windows 10 Pro x64 with that big November update without any issues except that now searching through registry takes literally forever because it never ends. It still finds entries but eventually it would just get stuck on searching and if i try to cancel it - regedit crashes.

This seems to happen somewhere during the search through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entries because i can search fine up to HKLM and past it but not inside it.

I've been wondering what could be causing this?

I've also found out that this is happening to other people:

Is this a know issue with the recent windows 10 update?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

We would be glad to help you with the issue you are facing today. I understand the difficulty with the problem.

Method: 1

Run the Search and Indexing Troubleshooter to diagnose the exact issue.

Follow the steps mentioned below.

a. Press “Windows key + Q”.

b. Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Search box and hit enter.

c. Select “View all” option from the left panel.

d. Select “Search and Indexing”.

e. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to run System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

Follow the steps:

a. Press “Windows Key + Q” button from the keyboard.

b. Type “Command Prompt” without quotes in the search box.

c. On the left pane, right click on the “Command Prompt” option and select “Run as Administrator”.

d. Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit enter (There should be space between sfc and /).

Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

Thank you.

Apparently this issue was already reported by numerous people since the last big update and sfc /scannow doesn't help. It says that no issues have been found.

I've tried making another account and there was no difference. As for Troubleshooting - i can't seem to find it. My system is in another language, i've launched something called "security and troubleshooting" and it said that they system has not found any issues.

I tried searching for 'borlond' an entry that should not exist and regedit ran non stop instead of saying entry not found.

I have a Lenovo laptop, a Toshiba laptop and a Dell desktop, all running Windows 10, and they all have this issue when searching through the registry.  Therefore, it's reasonable to conclude this is a Windows 10 bug rather than any specific problem with individual devices.

Same problem here with latest Windows 10 x64.

Searching in registry with regedit seems to be ultra slow as it takes forever.

Hello, same problem here with Windows 10 Enterprise x64.

The only solution I've found so far is to copy/paste regedt32 from /Windows/system32/ to somewhere else and run it manually.

Hope this works for you.

Same problem for me on Win10 Pro.  The ooRegEdit utility suggested by Sina works much better, at least for searching.
