Security update for Visual C++ (KB2467175) causes AVG Free 9.0 to fail

AVG Free 9.0 gives an Entry Point Not Found error (The procedure entry point FindActCtxSectionStringW could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll) ever since the above update installed itself.  Admittedly I'm still using the unsupported Windows 2000 and rumour has it that the Visual C++ update was not intended for this operating system and should not have installed.  Uninstalling the update has not fixed the problem.  Can anyone tell me how to restore my system to how it was before this apparently erroneous update?

See http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.exchange.admin/browse_frm/thread/b7d2d495377bb210

Extended Support for Windows 2000 SP4 ended on 13 July 2010. NONE of the updates released after 14 July 2010 will apply to Windows 2000.

Thanks for that - it's just that I don't have system backups that I can go back to, not that I would know what to do with them anyway.  Is there not something out there that I can just install to make this problem go away?

I realise Microsoft are not supporting Windows 2000 any more but I hadn't realised they were actively attempting to disable these systems.  Surely these updates should detect the target system before automatically installing?  Is there any chance that Microsoft will issue an update to undo this damage that they have caused?  And if so, how do we non-professionals get to hear about it?

There's a thread about this somewhere in the MSDN (Server?) forums but I just can't find it, sorry.

The update was for Visual C++ 2005 SP1, not Win2000.

Win2000 is no longer supported so you shouldn't even be trying to update a Win2000 computer.

I feel your pain but IMHO Microsoft did not cause "this damage."

FYI:

<QP>
Why was this bulletin rereleased on April 21, 2011?
Microsoft rereleased this bulletin to reoffer the updates to address a known issue in which the updates were erroneously offered to Microsoft Windows 2000 systems, which are no longer in support. This is a detection change only...

Unfortunately, this is not the case.  MS11-025 was applicable to MS Windows 2000 systems when it was released by Microsoft.  I believe they have since updated it to not apply to those outdated systems.

Nice, eh?
