The Windows Phone 7 Feature Request & Suggestion Thread

  • Hello all! Welcome to the feature request thread for Windows Phone 7. It’s great to see many people sharing ideas and criticisms of the platform.

How can you help? Throw your support for the features listed here or suggest new ones. The more detail you add, the better other users can get behind you!

A couple of things to note:

  • Please do not quote this post! This would make the thread unnecessarily long
  • This is not an official Microsoft thread. I am only a WP7 enthusiast, a regular user who wants to see the platform succeed. This is my way of helping.

DISCLAIMER : This list is not my personal list of wanted features, nor do I personally agree with every request listed here. My role here is to simply compile an easy-to-read list of popular feature the users of the WP7 forum would like to see in future updates.

And here's the list! Bold/Italic means my own clarification or interpretation of the requested feature. I often make references to competitor's products, so approve/blast of my thoughts!

General use:

  • custom hubs/folders to alleviate a long app list or jump letters similar to viewing lists in the People/Music + Videos Hubs JUMP LETTERS COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • phone keeps vibrating after second ring
  • custom ringtones COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Save camera settings COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Option to turn off camera shutter sound COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Manual brightness controls

  • SkyDrive integrated into Office Mobile for more than just OneNote COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Allow those who's carrier has changed the search engine change it back to Bing (or something else)
  • rotate pictures in the camera roll
  • Enter URLs in Internet Explorer while in landscape COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • backup for apps’ isolated storage, not just cloud backups
  • Resettable stats for minutes used/SMS messages sent/data used (This would be very helpful to those who have low limits in their minutes/SMS/data plan)
  • option to disable haptic feedback on the hardware back/start/search buttons
  • MAPS APP: Turn by turn directions COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • MAPS APP: Public transit
  • MAPS APP: Download maps
  • Landscape throughout the OS and MS apps
  • Disable search button during games
  • Customizable colours for the accent colour
  • Call history in Phone app shows call lengths
  • Eliminate the swipe up required to answer a call
  • HTML5/Flash/Silveright support in Internet Explorer (we know Flash is coming, but we don't know when.) HTML5/SILVERLIGHT COMING IN MANGO UPDATE

  • Ability to increase text size in places such as SMS messages and People Hub
  • Parental controls such as browser filters, monitors, blocked app purchases, etc.
  • For phones that have an LED, it blinks when there is a missed call, voicemail, waiting text message
  • Open password-protected Office documents
  • Facebook notifications COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Send to OneNote option in IE/Email
  • Do not hide the paste button after the first paste (Doing this makes people think you can only paste once)
  • Notification history list, so we can see notifications we received if we couldn't respond to them right away
  • Pin individual settings directly to the Start screen
  • Announce caller
  • Windows Live Messenger app from Microsoft COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Facebook chat COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Visual voicemail COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • MAC CONNECTOR: Address Book. (A Mac user is more likely to have their contacts in the system Address Book than a Windows Live account. Perhaps a Connector could be embedded in the Connector software similar to what’s offered to Outlook on Windows? )

Zune & Media:

  • editable Now playing playlist
  • Ability to clear recently played
  • Ability to create and save playlists on the phone COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Ability to download podcasts directly to the phone COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Show album art of last played song if artist picture cannot be found (This would also make the Music + Videos Hub look pretty for those of us who do not have the music store available since the artist picture depends on that)
  • Allow dragging of the seek bar. COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Gapless playback on the phone
  • App management on the Zune desktop client, similar to what iTunes does for iOS apps.
  • Jump-to Now Playing list from the media controls overlay (There's enough room for another button next to ring/vibrate!)

People Hub:

  • Search People Hub by more fields (by Company, Title, notes, etc.)
  • Link to a contact’s significant other if it’s in the phone (Ex.: Manly Man and Girly Girl are both in your contact list. Manly has Girly listed as his significant other. Clicking this field in his contact card would open Girly’s contact card. Same concept could by applied to children )
  • Turn off contacts from the primary Live account
  • Favourite contacts (Argument was this is already implemented in Windows Live website/Messenger)
  • support for contact groups COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Twitter integration akin to Facebook's integration COMING IN MANGO UPDATE

  • Add weekly view to calendar
  • various snooze times on events/alarms
  • vibration on events reminders/alarms
  • Separate the alarm/reminder volume from the main volume (All other phones I've owned had the alarm and vibration of an alarm/event reminder separate from the ringer volume. Useful for not having to remember to max out your ringer or turn off vibrate every night for the alarm! )
  • Sync more than the primary calendar of an account COMING IN MANGO UPDATE
  • Turn off the calendar from the primary Live account

  • VPN support
  • Bluetooth audio support for videos (and support for more Bluetooth profiles in general)
  • An official Remote Desktop Connection client

USB & Sync:

  • Tethering support
  • USB mass storage
  • WiFi sync on demand as opposed to "wait X minutes while plugged in battery is above y level"

Regional gripes:

  • Enable voice find command in more locales
  • Chinese/Arabic input
  • Bing Maps improvement (Obviously this isn’t something that can be done overnight and hopefully will be done overtime. It’s listed because Europeans have been vocal about Bing Maps)
Commonly missed items that get listed as feature requests:
  • “Adding friends on Facebook takes hours to be recognized on the phone!”Settings>email & accounts. Hold your finger down on the account and sync/delete options will appear to force a sync on that account or delete that account.
  • “Audio recording!” this can currently be done through OneNote, but it’s not fun to play them back. I suppose you could make a single note for audio clips, but there’s no way to give names to the recorded clips.
  • “A forward button in IE" This is done by tapping the … at the bottom of the screen to bring up more options in IE. One of them is a forward button. However, since you do not get any UI when the phone is in landscape in IE, this forces portrait mode to go forward. There is a request in the above list for UI in IE while the phone is in landscape mode.
  • “Ability to turn off the camera button waking the phone while locked!”Settings>swipe left>Pictures + camera. There is a slider to control the camera button waking the phone while in lock
  • “Zune opens when I connect my phone!” In Zune: Settings>Software>General. There’s an option to control this behaviour.
  • “Arrow keys to move the cursor in text entry fields!” Hold your finger down on the field you’re entering text in. A cursor will pop up above your finger. Drag it down to the position you want to edit from.
  • I can't paste my text more than once! When the keyboard is open, swipe right on the bar above the keyboard where word suggestions appear. The Paste icon will come back.

I truly believe that if Microsoft puts at least 75% of these suggestions into the phone, it will annihilate the Android and the Iphone quickly. My only gripe with the phone right now is that Facebook has no push notifications. Whether its through the people hub or the microsoft made Facebook app, this phone needs facebook push notifications....

Instead of forcing customer to use "the cloud" when will we be able to use local storage for these and other files?

Also when will we be able to simple place the files on the phone using the USB cable that came with the phone again i should not be forced to use the cloud?

I bought this phone because i did not like the limitations of the IPhone, now i have to deal with another set of limitations  that did not exist on previous Microsoft mobile platforms this is frustrating?

Same here. Cloud is one thing, but the phone shall also authorize local storage for usual documents/office documents. Hope a solution will be found soon, because at this stage WP7 is even more closed and locked than iPhone. I can't stand it.

I've started building a list of items that disappoint me with this first release of WP7, but wanted to ask people here what they thought about the lack of Tasks and free/busy searches when adding attendees to meetings.  I thought those were going to be standard since this is a MS phone syncing with Exchange.  Does anyone know if they'll be added in a future release?

Other items are:

1.  Lack of device/SD card encryption

2.  Flash support

3.  Cut/paste

4.  3rd party app multitasking

5.  No native VPN client

Thanks,

John

Oops, and I forgot a really big one...how about a way to easily backup/restore the phone, INCLUDING all the settings.  Not just apps (linked to Live ID) and other items via SkyDrive.

First of all, I truly enjoy using the Windows Phone 7, especially with my Zune Pass and Wireless Sync!! The Email listing is great as well  with the quick ability to sort by unread, urgent, and flagged.

This is not a post of problems or critisism, but ideas for future features and improvements:

>Ability to set remeinders from message list
>Ability to reduce font size and/or spacing of email message list to fit more on the screen (for those of us with 200+ message days)
>Option to set default calendar, and IT policy to prevent personal calendar integration with Outlook
>Seperate volume controls for Earpiece, Music, Bluetooth Audio, Ringer, Alarms, Alerts
>Place call when locked (perhaps I missed an option for this or voice command when locked)
>RSS Feed integration
>Clock display when charging (alarm clock mode)
>Music Ringtones
>Additional Background options (patterns, but nothing too busy)
>Remote Desktop
>Microsoft Points as payment for songs after Zune credits expire (perhaps a bug)
>VPN

Long shot ideas:
>DLNA for all models (not just LG)
>Media Center / Extender Remote
>WHS Connector for internet sync (and/or Zune on WHS)
>Video and music streaming from WHS
>Email integration with SYNC car systems
>Song data when streaming bluetooth media to SYNC car system and other bluetooth car systems

hi,

you can place calls when locked, as long as you are connected to a bluetooth headset. just keep pressing the answer button of your headset for a few seconds to start the voice recognition.

with my jabra cruise this works pretty well - only the audio qulity sucks :-)

Like most people, I want my ringer sound to be loud so that I can hear it.

I'd also like feedback when tapping keys when typing, but that sound should be soft so that I get feedback and not make other people around think there's someone chopping wood.

The volume of Zune would be somewhere in the middle, so that I can enjoy my music while not damaging my ears.

So keeping the same sound level for all sounds all over the phone is very non-intuitive. Any plan to address this soon? Or something I can do to set different sound levels for different purposes?

I need an independently fully functioning phone. I live in the sticks. I am not always in an area with good cellular service, let alone WIFI is available. The documents I pout on line are needed documents that must always be available. I enjoy most of the services through Windows Live, Cloud, Sky drive and whatever. In the end though I need to be able to add files directly to my phone. It is bad enough to have to use Zune's for music I already have. I refused to get an I phone because I did not want to be tied to ITunes and I won't be keeping this phone for long if things do not change.

At first I found Windows Phone 7 and my HTC Trophy very impressive but a few things are making me fall rapidly out of love with it. Call them bugs, flaws, omissions - whatever you call them, they're disappointing:

1) The Calendar function won't fully sync with my Google Calendar account. It's synced only four events out of dozens, and quite a random four, too. Nothing I've tried fixes this.

2) I can't turn the camera-shutter sound off. Even with the phone on silent, it still sounds.

3) Ringtones individually assigned to different contacts don't work - it's always the default ringtone that rings, whoever calls.

4) Deleting the 'Personal (Web)' folder from SkyDrive (which WP7 places there during the first sync) renders OneNote on the phone unusable, in terms of syncing with OneNote on my PC. (To be fair, there is a warning in the relevant Help section onlinenot to delete the 'Personal (Web)' file, but that's no use if you've already deleted it, oblivious to its importance. You're only likely to consult the Help section once you've deleted it and experienced problems, so a warning at the time deletion is attempted would be much more useful.) This action can't be undone, seemingly, so now I'm left without an important function of the phone - possibly forever!

5) Can't play YouTube videos embedded in Facebook.

6) Can't rotate photos.

7) Can't seem to get a 3G signal anywhere that I used to be able to. Probably not a WP7 issue but thought I'd throw it in there anyway. Stuck on GPRS, having a smartphone seems fairly pointless in most regards.

I'm sure this list will get added to in time - after all, I've only had the phone for four days. WP7 is beautiful, but good design isn't just beauty; it's functionality too, and there's a lot lacking on that front at the moment.
