Question

Saving PDF Email Attachments

How do I save a PDF email attachment on the Windows Phone 7?  I know I can do this with a word file, but most of the attachments I receive are in PDF format.

Thank you in advance.

Tap the file to open it.  It will open in Adobe Reader if you've installed the application to your phone.  If you haven't installed the application it will ask you if you want to install it and if you say yes, Adobe Reader will be installed to the phone and your PDF file will open up so you can read it.  There is no save option - the file gets saved when you open it up.  Later if you wnat to read the PDF file again, you can open up Adobe Reader and you'll see a list of the PDF files on the phone.

What if, thereafter, you want to e-mail the pdf to someone.  Can it be done, or not?

Then you need to "forward" the email to the person. Forwarding retains the attachment and lets you add different recipients and compose a message while also being able to remove the original message the the "FW:" subject prefix. Easy!

No, this does not work in real world scenarios, unfortunately.

Suppose I received the e-mail with the .pdf attached.  I open the .pdf with Adobe Reader.  The .pdf is automatically saved to the phone.  Suppose I delete the e-mail; the .pdf is still saved and can still be opened by Adobe Reader.  What if I want to send it to somebody a week later, but the original e-mail is deleted, or it has fallen off my server sync?  I can't forward the original message, and there is no way to send the .pdf attached to a new message.

The only thing the solutions I read on this forum seem to offer is that we should be using our phones differently.

No offense... but this isn't good enough. It is not Microsofts place to tell us what we should and should not expect to be able to do with smartphones. People already have expectations after years of smartphone use. As a new player to the market, WP7 should be building on what came before, not knocking it all down and massively limiting their definition of a smartphone.

Microsoft need to admit that locking down the file system was a huge mistake.

Daily I read from people who are disappointed with what their phones cannot do because Microsoft have intentianally limited the WP7 platform.

Bch238, There is no way to do it as you have asked.

The only way is to forward the original email. At this time attachments for new emails from the phone are only for pictures.

Thank you for the response, Developer Team.  I see two possible solutions:

  • Encourage Adobe to include a "share" function in their Reader app (and allow them the keys to the OS to make this happen, if necessary); or
  • Make this a native function of the OS

It would not be so bad if I did not also use Exchange Server 2003.  As you certainly know by now, WP7 has a bug when used with ES 2003, which makes it impossible to forward an e-mail  as other than a .eml attachment.  A Windows Phone (and many other phones) cannot open a .eml attachment.  In my view, the best solution would be to:

  • enable in-line forwarding of e-mails either by default (preferred);
  • or provide an option for forwarding e-mails in-line.

Forwarding e-mails as attachments is bad practice and frowned upon in the business world.  There is a high risk that the recipient of the forwarded e-mail will reply to the original sender and not the forwarder, as intended.  This places communications intended as confidential at risk.   Without this, I am forced to forward e-mails only when returning to the office, so I can do it from my desktop.  Bringing my laptop with me kind of defeats the purpose of having a Windows Phone.

I know it can be done, because my wife's iPhone 3GS can do it using the same server I use.  The iPhone even gives a pop-up option to attach any original attachments to a forwarded e-mail.  Please prioritize this basic functionality ahead of complaints about Zune having hidden features, mp3 ring tones, and other fluff.  Get the basics down first, please.

You have a tremendously good product in WP7, but it cannot be hobbled by design.  Those of us who have been with Microsoft since the beginning (since the Pocket PC days) expect this kind of functionality, and we are starting to feel abandoned for our loyalty.

Keep up the good work and have a happy Thanksgiving.

Well spoken response and the ability to send or share all types of data on the phone should be a top priority.

Now that I am aware of this limitation, and until it gets addressed by Adobe with an update of their software, I think I'll forward the emails with the attachment to my Sugar Sync web space.  Then the PDF files will be there if I need to email them to anyone else.  I can just open up Internet Explorer, go to my Sugar Sync web space and email a link to anyone I might want to share the file with.
