Question

WP7 Error During Update: 801812C1

I know exactly why it is happening, and this is the same problem I'm having with wireless sync.  All other functions between Zune and the phone are fine, as apparently they do not require the Zune or ZuneWireless device driver.

The WindowsPhone driver installation fails the same way on the initial, first try but then seems to complete normally every other time somehow.

The phone disconnects automatically before the Zune or Zune Wireless driver completely installs.  It takes upwards of 5 to 10 minutes before I get a driver installation failure with the "Device Unplugged" message.  I have no idea why it takes so long for the driver installation, but it's nothing I can seem to fix.

So:
  • Is there a way to update this wait timeout of the phone during driver installation to be indefinite or at least much longer?
  • Is there a way to manually install these drivers so they are ready to use upon the phone's connection?
Note:  There is no reason to post a link to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484484#801812C1 here as a potential answer.  The solution on that page has no impact on my problem.  It explains the issue I'm having, but the solution will not work because it assumes there was some error due to a non-repeatable problem.

Answer

I tried to update on another computer, and I got a timeout error. I then used the windows phone support tool. It "recovers" your phone and seems to pre-update it. After I used that tool, I was able to update. Here's the link, just in case.

Its a different error, but the phone tool is on that link. Hope this helps someone!

Hello Billy,

Have you tried to install the drivers for connect to PC mode manually?

See my answer here and let me know if it is ok to merge the threads:

Even in Connect to PC mode the issue is the phone resets before the driver install completes causing the "Device Unplugged" error. It appears to be bound by the same timeout. Is there something in your post about a true manual driver installation I'm missing?

The issue is Zune sends a (ssdp::)byebye signal to the phone before the driver installation can complete. Upon a second attempt the WindowsPhone driver is always somehow already installed and appears to be working fine through my sniffing, however, but I can't get the Zune or ZuneWireless to ever complete in the same fashion.

I know it's not the phone, as it does this with two separate models. I've updated one on a Mac with perfect success to test that theory as well. It is literally the Zune client (I'm assuming it is the Zune client here and not the phone) gives up too fast and tells the phone to disconnect. I'm about sick of debugging this ****. There has to be a way to either tell Zune to wait indefinitely or install the driver manually.

EDIT:  I'd just do both phones on the Mac and be done with it (how's that for ironic, having to use a Mac to update a WP7 phone because Windows can't do it), but I'd like to get Wireless Sync to work too and it is the same issue.

Also Ravi Teja R has a reply in your linked post that outlines the same problem, but he was able to luckily just skip windows update online searching and get it down to below the timeout period.  I'm not so lucky.

Hello Billy,

Good to hear that you was able to update (using workaround with different computer).

As far as I know there should be no timeout if you are installing the driver manually with device booted to "Connect to PC" mode. And if you are connecting the device to a PC the device is not recognized in Zune - it will just open the restore option and you can close the Zune to reinstall the driver manually for connect to PC mode using device manager.

However the timeout was set for the update process in Zune.

Have you also tried to reinstall the Zune using bundle installation package?

The phone itself seems to not timeout and will happily set in Connect to PC mode all day until I load the Zune software and it starts trying to install the Zune driver.  It's a consistent reset timeout that the software is sending to the phone causing it to reboot before the driver installs :(

All normal syncing works fine because it seems Zune doesn't require the Zune or ZuneWireless device driver for normal operation.  I've also tried a new install, making sure those Zune drivers are first on my search list by doing a regedit, etc yesterday.  I just can't speed up the device driver installation enough to occur before Zune sends the signal.  I could write a program to intercept the ssdp::byebye message at least for the wireless problem (I haven't messed much with intercepting on the USB stack), but that seems a little crazy to have to do that.

I consider it a flaw/bug in Zune to timeout while a driver installation is still occurring.

I'm throwing my hands up on the issue, I've wasted enough personal time on it.  Anyone having this problem, the only current recourse is another computer unless Zune fixes the issue of timing out too early.

Is there somewhere I can report this issue in detail?  I don't know if it matters, but I have a MSDN Ultimate and AppHub account if that lets me talk to someone higher up on the Zune chain using a feature of those :)

I am unfortunately having the same problem. I have a...

1. Samsung
2. SGH-i917 (Focus)
3. AT&T
4. Phone Operating System version: 7.0.7004.0
5. Zune software version: the latest one, installed it today (again)
6. I'm running Windows Vista

I have tried EVERYTHING on all the top 20 forums listed on google for this problem. I still can't get my phone to update. I've spent this whole past week (about 30 hours, total) trying to update. I am very frustrated, to say the least. Is there some way I can send my phone in so Microsoft can try updating it? I am at my wit's end. I unfortunately do not have a mac to try the update on. I just need help because I am about to throw my phone against a wall.

I had the same error and someone suggested that it may be that my computer's anti-virus programme was to blame, so I disabled the anti-virus and then did the upgrade which went through without any further hitches. I must add that I had tried everything recommended by the pundits by this stage.

Sorry to see others having the same problem as me, but I knew it would come up.  The goal to fixing it is to reduce the time it takes to find the driver it is looking for.  It really has little to do with the phone or Zune, but instead actual Windows (at least in the fact that they apparently aren't going to update Zune to handle this situation, which I think they should).

If you are a semi-advanced user here are few things to try.  I managed to get mine to find the driver in time for about 1 out 5 tries by doing these things.  Once it finds the driver the first time, everything works smooth from then on.

Edit the Default Driver Search Location Registry Key
You will want to just pre-pend the Zune driver location to it.
Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath
Original Value:
%SystemRoot%\inf
New Value:
C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune;%SystemRoot%\inf

Disable the Windows Update searching during driver installation

Note 1:  Make sure to notice you'll actually need to turn off two items (one in the steps and there is a Note in the heading to tell you about another one to turn off).

Note 2: that if you are part of a real domain, you'll need to reconnect to that domain and reboot before the policy will be effective.  Otherwise, just reboot.

Edit:  Also note that I never found a way to actually report this issue other than calling support, which would be a waste of time.

I have a Samsung Focus SGH-i917 with OS version 7.0.7004.0 that I cannot get to complete the update phone process with the Zune software to the February 2011 update. My system is an XP sp3. In the process, step 6 (rebooting your phone) takes a long time. When the computer finaly recognizes the phone it will continue its reboot and go to the home screen. Zune will then start step 7 and give error code 801812C1 indicating issues with the windows mobile driver. I have tried many different suggestions from the database but I continue to get this error.

Hi David E Jordan

Have a look at the following thread relating to the same issue:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/samsung-focus-att-update-failure-801812c1/581f06fa-b8e6-4ef6-9136-0a95fab37069

You may have already tried the solution in the KB article, if so can you let us know what the result was?

Thanks for posting
