Answer

Hello Michela and Philip,

The error message indicates the issue with driver that needs to be installed when the device is in "Connect to PC" mode (black screen with picture connecting phone to a laptop). Device manager on your PC should also show different name (model name) under portable devices when in "Connect to PC" mode.

Can you check if there is difference in Device Manager Portable Devices on your PC when your phone is in "Connect to PC" mode and normal mode? (You should see different names in every mode)

For your reference use the KB article and do not forget to click the link "Click here to show/hide solution" to show all the steps for the solution.

Make sure you do have internet connection on your PC and can access Windows Update website.

Power your device with holding camera button to get into the "Connect to PC" mode - start the device manager on your PC and connect your phone using USB cable.

Device should be visible with the model name under Portable devices in Device Manager (it is important to have you device in "Connect to PC" mode with black screen and computer image).
- driver for phone in "Connect to PC" mode should install automatically if missing
- are there any exclamation marks for this driver (model name of your device?)

If the driver is installed correctly for the "Connect to PC" mode you can try to uninstall/reinstall the driver using Action - Uninstall

Note: after the uninstallation of the driver the phone will restart in normal mode. You need to disconnect and power your phone off and restart it in "Connect to PC" mode again. The driver should reinstall automatically after connecting your phone in "Connect to PC" mode.

When the driver for "Connect to PC" mode would be installed correctly you should be able to pass the update Step 7 in update process.

Best Regards
Martin V.

Absolutley... The Problem I assume is: After rebooting Windows 7 detects the Optimus 7 as "Windows Mobile" and beginns to search for a predefined Driverplace on the phone... You get the Error, which is explained in the Text above the failure Code, "phone in wrong Connection mode" (yeah its detected as a normal device and not as a Windows phone 7 By (driver search Starts not zune) So just wait for it to fail find driver on the phone or on Windows update... Then you get a read cross on the driver search , the device is nie called "Zune" Close this window, let your phone connected and restart the update process... IT Works fine... sorry for the spelling im fighting against my phone, which thinks i m writing German... For questions you'll find me on Twitter #florianstutz

We would recommend at this time, not to retry the update, as subsequent attempts will probably fail similarly. While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity. There are some issues reported with some devices and Microsoft is investigating the root cause. Could you please share more details related to:

1) Phone model and operator/country (is it Mobile Operator branded device or open market phone)
2) Step where update fails
3) error code(s)
4) does the computer/Zune recognize the phone?
5) host machine OS and version (32/64 bit)

Best Regards
Martin V.

Thanks for this very quick response!

Here are my answers:

1: LG Optimus 7 operating within open market in Iceland. Vodafone is the network provider.
2: It stops in STEP 6 in the update procedure.
3: 801812C1 - Im sorry that I did not take note of more detailed description... I would have to retry to see it again.
4: Zune does recognize the phone. Never been a problem there.
5: Im running Windows 7 32bit version.

Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem as Zkuggi:

1. Samsung Omnia 7, unbranded on Meteor in Ireland

2. It stops in Step 6 rebooting the phone

3. 801812C1 is the only error it gives

4. Zune recognises the phone no probem

5. Windows 7 32bit

The only other information I can give is that after the phone reboots, Windows tries to install device drivers for it. This process fails with error:

Zune - Device Unplugged. Windows event log shows the following entries:

A driver package which uses user-mode driver framework version 1.9.0 is being installed on device USB\VID_045E&PID_0710\71BD9CCD-1CCB-1FBD-5A1C-9BDCE14E01C4.

The driver package installation has succeeded.

The upgrade process failed twice with the same error and the same event log entries are present for both.

Hello Martin!

I've encountered the same problem about 30 minutes ago, when I was trying to update my phone.

The symptoms are the same.

1) HTC 7 Trophy  Operator:Vodafone Hungary  Country: Hungary (I've been working for Vodafone Hungary Ltd. -where the Trophy is only available- so I was given this phone as a business phone)

2) The update stops after the 6th step

3) 801812C1 (I made a screenshot about the error)

4) Zune recognize my phone, all of the services are working properly except the update.

5) I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit version with a Dell Studio 1535 laptop.

I hope Microsoft is going to give an explanation about this case.

With regards,

Bálint Kordováner

Great News! I have stumbled upon a solution for the 801812C1 error!

I have reasons to believe that this works only for LG E900 Optimus 7 phones. If you want to try this on your Samsung Omnia 7, please read my note at the end of the post.

Here's what I did (LG E900 Optimus 7 / Windows 7 64bit):

During Step 6 (Rebooting your phone), your Windows OS detects your phone as a new device and starts searching for driver updates online. This can be seen when you click on the little indicator with a spinning green circle in the bottom-right corner of your desktop called the notification area (you might need to click on Show Hidden Icons if it's hidden).

You have to *immediately* click on "Skip Obtaining Device Software Online" or Zune will time-out and show error 801812C1.

Once you've skipped obtaining the drivers online, in about 20 seconds or so, your device will be recognized and you will be promptly taken to the Step 7 of the update.

Note for Samsung Omnia 7 users:

Even if you've gotten past the Step 6 801812C1 error, many users are getting stuck at Step 7 at 100% of 'Backing up your phone' resulting in a few users getting their phones bricked -- you might want to wait till that issue is resolved before trying this fix.

Hope this helps.
