Hi, I just reviewed the manual for my upcoming WP7 device. (11/8 is the big day.) I was planning on preparing everything for a seamless transfer of literlly hundreds of files that I keep synchronized between my desktop & my smartphone. Currently my smartphone is sync'd throughout the day as I work on my laptop or desktop. Word, Excel, my tasks, even PDFs are ready to go without much trouble. How do we manage files in the new OS? I use this for business so keeping my file updated and ready to go is a must. Currently I operate an XP desktop or Windows 7 laptop to 6.1 smartphone setup.
Thanks,
J
If you have access to Sharepoint 2010, then you'll be able to sync your Word & Excel files...if you don't have access to Sharepoint 2010, then you are out of luck ....believe it or not, there is no other way to sync these files to a WP7 phone. Those of us who do not have access to Sharepoint (and I am in that group) are left with emailing these kinds of files back and forth between the phone and the computer or some other convoluted method (such as downloading them from our Windows Live account to the phone - with any changes made on the phone being emailed back to the computer. Archaic, isn't it?
There is no task application that is native on the WP7, so there is no way to sync tasks to a WP7 phone. I haven't yet figured out how I will handle this lack of functionality on my WP7 phone.
The only Office application that syncs to a windows live account is OneNote. There is no way tosync Excel or Word documents between a WP7 device and a Windows Live account...the only way to sync these kinds of files is if you have access to Sharepoint 2010.
"SharePoint Workspace Mobile lets you view, edit, and save Microsoft Office documents that are on a SharePoint 2010 site, which is a website that lets you and others share documents and ideas. When you make and save changes to the document on your phone, other people can see your changes in the document on the SharePoint site. Likewise, if someone else makes a change to the document, you can get the latest version so you have the most up-to-date copy." Seethis link for more information.
Hello Prof Julie, I'm very surprised. No wonder I had trouble finding information about actively syncing my files. But no, they actually left this out. I guess it will be difficult to pull off last minute active synching before rushing from my desktop to the airport. I dread the thought. Yes, this is archaic. It will be agonizing to go back to that process of emailing files to myself. In fact, I can see myself keeping my 6.1 device active as a PDA carried along with my WP7 device. And I'll have to carry my laptop more often than I planned. Honestly, I’m stunned and miffed. I thought this would be a key way to differentiate from the iPhone and I'm one of those people that held out.
Well, I there are no plans to get a SharePoint account. Let's see what happens between Nov 8 and day 13 of my experience with WP7. You never know, I might end up waiting for the next generation.
Thanks to everyone that responded. I look forward to reading about our collective experiences.
Without emailing docs to yourself, I'm sure you can still use SkyDrive by just logging onto the website on your WP7 device as you would on your computer browser and going through the folders or go directly tohttp://skydrive.live.com on your WP7 browser to access your docs. They must be working to enable full compatibility with WP7.

It would be fine if you could at least edit a skydrive file on the fly.
Instead you have to download, save to your phone, edit, and then email it to yourself and once home upload it to skydrive.
