Question
Windows Mobile 6.5 Messaging runs in background, hangs screen
I recently upgraded to Windows 6.5 on my Verizon HTC Ozone (using the official Verizon release of WM 6.5). Overall it is running okay, but I have one problem that has become very annoying.
When I'm done using the Messaging program (my Exchange email account, my Hotmail account, or text messaging) the program continues to run in the background even if I hit end. No big deal except when a new message of any kind comes in and I click on "Messaging"
it defaults to the old program. For example, if I send a text message and then later an Exchange email comes in, when I select "Messaging" it goes back to the text screen.
To try and work around that, I would go to Task Manager and select "End Program" for the messaging app when I was done. (I also did this with WM 6.1 and had no issues.) Now whenever I do that, the messaging app closes and it shows that it is no longer running
in Task Manager. But about 2-5 minutes later, the frame only of the messaging program comes up and locks the screen from any other program.
So in other words, if I have the HTC home screen up and nothing else running, all of a sudden the bar at the top will say "SMS / MMS" and the bottom bar will come up and say "Reply" and "Menu" but the picture in the middle will still be the home screen and
not the text screen. But I can't do anything because the text program is still running, so I have to hit the End button and then it goes back to the home screen no matter what.
This has become very annoying and it doesn't matter which account I use. When I end the program hitting the end button, it doesn't really end the program. If I end the program using task manager, it says it is done but later the goofy screen comes back up.
Does anyone have any idea what is going one? I am puzzled. This never happened with WM 6.1 so it is very frustrating. I thought this version was supposed to be less buggy but from my experience I have had worse luck.
If a soft reset is not curing that issue I would certainly consider performing a hard reset to bring it back to its original state. Try it for a few days to see if it works fine BEFORE you add any programs. If it does work fine then possibly it was a program
you added that caused the issue.

Hello, Jack -
Thanks for the reply. I'll try the hard reset and see if that helps. I only have two programs loaded that aren't part of the official operating system and neither of those is running when this happens.
It almost appears as if the program is syncing after it is closed, which is weird because the only time it should sync is when new email arrives or when a message is sent (as I have it set up).
I'll let you know how the hard reset goes. If you can think of anything else, please let me know.
But... I noticed something that may help shed light on this. When I sat there and watched the phone after I closed out any of the messaging accounts, I noticed that what happens is that 2-3 minutes later it does an auto "send and receive" and that is what
is activating the window. It is really odd because this even happens for SMS messaging. So I have it set to send and receive when a message is sent and then as items arrive.
So why in the world would it be doing its own send and receive a few minutes after I close the program out? That is bizzarre. Is there a registry tweak to make that not happen?
Hmmm, I would have expected that the hard reset would have brought it back to proper working order. I do not use Exchange so I am not sure if it is related to that but I'll send a note to one of the mods to see what his take on the issue is.
Have you checked to see if there are any "updates" for your device on the HTC site?

Hi,
First, I can tell you from my experience I do not see this with the 6.5 devices I have used.
Have you tried closing other applications and then switching to the messaging application? I am concerned that there is not enough ram to run it.
Also, have you contacted Verizon about the issue? They should know about it and may have a fix for it. Another option is to contact HTC however they may refer you to Verizon.

Thanks for getting back Johan and Chris. With the hard reset not fixing the issue I would have to guess it may be a problem specific to the Ozone. Like Chris, I have not experienced it however I do not use Exchange and I am not sure if it may be related
to Exchange (although I doubt it).

I did reinstall the upgrade and I did another hard reset so everything was back to original. I did not add any third party apps either.
And...
It happened again. The weird thing to me is on this same phone this never happened on WM 6.1 so I wonder if it is something with Verizon's WM 6.5 version. All three messaging apps keep doing their own random send/receive after I close out the program.
What else is strange to me is if the program is closed via Task Manager and shows that it is not running, how can it still be running in the background?
I'll ask Verizon to see if they know. Thanks for trying to help, everyone, and if you think of anything else please post.
Ok, we are sort of at a wait and see if something appears Mike. I'm sorry we could not find a definitive answer for you but it may well be an Ozone specific issue and since we do not have that device, we cannot duplicate the same issue. Maybe someone
who has the device and is having the same issue will jump in.

I've been having the same problem. I'm running WM 6.5 on the T-mobile HTC touch pro2. Every few minutes, my taskbar would say Messaging, and at the bottom it would say Delete and Menu. This happens while I'm running applications too, i.e. Solitare and
AIM. I'm not sure why it's doing this, but it appears it might be WM 6.5 and not just an individual carrier or phone
