Question

Windows Mobile 6.5 and Microsoft Reader

Hi,

I have a brand new HTC HD2 phone  with Win mobile 6.5.  I have installed Microsoft Reader on it, but when I try to activate it tells me my version of windows mobile is too old.  I have quite a lot of DRM protected files and would really like to get this working.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
best regards

Answer

Many thanks. I did edit my last comment, but obviously did it incorrectly!!

Anyhow, great success!! Went to the HTC download/update site and downloaded a later ROM version. Everything has gone fine and I have activated HTC first time and am reading my first book on this PDA. Would strongly advise all other HTC HD2 users to do the same thing. I'm sure it is the answer. I know the download site gives warngs, but I woild emphasise it is most important to back up before starting installing the updated ROM.

Good luck. I'm a very ha[[y "bunny"

Did you download from here:

I have it installed and activated on my Verizon Imagio and Touch Pro2 (both with WM6.5)

Hi Jack,  yes that's where I got it from.  After more searching I eventually found out about a missing file (sorry haven't got the link anymore) and that got it working until I turned it off.  next time I used reader it would just freeze and I would have to do a soft reset.  I have given up now.  I have about 100 books in .lit format so it is a real dissapointment.

I received the following from my contact on the MS Reader team.  She has always been very helpful and has offered to assist you.  Read what she sent to me below:

The initial error message that they are seeing is usually from the missing OEMInfo.xml file.  This file is manufacturer dependent and is created by sending a key blob to Microsoft.  If they got the file from an unreliable source that doesn't match the key blob then that may cause the issue that they are seeing.  Have them email *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and I will send them a file that should match and we can go from there.

Iain, do me a favor if you can.  After you get the file from MSReaderGirl, if the issue is resolved, will you please come back and post here?

errm, forgive my ignorance Jack, but what is a "key blob" and am I supposed to send it or do I ask HTC to send it?

Don't worry about that Iain ... I had the same question when I first saw it.  I felt that it had to some sort of "coding" that was sent and in fact it was.

I saw this explanation that I got here:

key BLOB :
A BLOB containing an encrypted private key. Key BLOBs provide a way to store keys outside the CSP. Key BLOBs are created by exporting an existing key from the CSP by calling the CryptExportKey function. Later, the key BLOB can be imported into a provider (often a different CSP on a different computer) by calling the CryptImportKey function. This creates a key in the CSP that is a duplicate of the one that was exported.

Truth be told, I did not even understand all of that but it was enough for me to have a basic understanding.  Check out the link I gave above.
