Question

Wifi network problems with Samsung Omnia

Hi,

I have just purchased a Samsung Omnia and am very keen to get my wireless internet set up so i can surf the internet.

My problem is that the phone says it is connected to my wireless router (which is a Belkin). However, when i click on the internet icon, it says "network problem".

Could you please explain what i need to do to get it up and running?

Thanks for your time,

Chris

Answer

I have the exact same issue that Bananspnk has. My wifi completely dissapears for no apparent reason. The Wireless Connection Manager wont allow me to turn it On or Off depending on when the phone lost the wifi. The actual Wifi button under settings just takes me to the Network Connections tab with the Wireless tab completely missing. I spent 45 mins on the phone with Verizon Tech support, of which the conclusion was to Hard Reset the phone. Then 3 hours later it mysteriously dissapeared again. So I once again did a Hard Reset this morning and am waiting to see if the Wifi just dissapears again?

I have been all over the web today reading up on people with similar issues and it seems to be an unanswered question. Obviously no one is going to want to own a phone they have to Wipe clean everyday.

***Edit***

My phone battery currently dropped from about 1/2 to almost dead within a matter of an hour, so I am unable to put any more time into contacting Verizon or Samsung and discussing it with them in greater detail. If/When I find anything out I will re-post here.

***Added Information 12/11/08***

So after spending a lot of time on the web and reading every bit of information I could get my hands on it does appear that the reason the WiFi dissapears is because of the Power save. When the battery reaches a certain level it automatically disables the WiFi so that the battery is not drained further. While my battery was low (and plugged in) I disabled the Power Save for wifi and it immediately returned and became responsive again.

It makes sense that they would add the power save feature to protect from the Wifi search draining your phone battery constantly searching for a wireless network. However if you turn off the power save and in turn forget to disable (through the Connection Manager) Wifi your battery life will be severly shortened.

Hope this helps everyone!

Carny,

In addition, did you go to Edit > Proxy Settings and for My Work Network, tick off the box " This network connects to the internet". and click OK.

Then, go to Settings > Connections > Wifi ...
Select your wireless router ( Belkin ), tap on it and select Connects to "The Internet "..
Click Next and then insert the required network key, if any and then click Finish to complete.

I assume that your other connection settings are in order for the time being...

Thanks a lot for your help,

however it is still not working?

I followed the first steps and all went okay - the box was ticked so i unticked it

However, i went to do the second step and when i dropped the 'connects to' tab down, there is nothing there?!

Also, the network key is the password for the wireless network isn't it? because i have typed that password in and it is connected.

Thanks again,

Chris

Have to reconfirm with you...

Did you untick the box for the proxy settings in the first step ?  Under proxy settings you should tick (yes) for " The network connects to the internet.

For the second step, you should just tap on the (Belkin wireless)... OK, instead of tapping, just highlight ( Belkin ), press Menu > Edit  and then for Connects to.... select The Internet ( the other drop down option should be Work ). Then click Next ,  put in you password key, and then click Finish....

Thanks a lot for your help once again!

i did the first step no worries.

However, once again i did as you say - i taped on the wirless router's name and then >menu >edit and the heading is 'configure wireless network' and it says network name which is in grey letters so i can't change it and then below it it says connects to and it is BLANK!! there is nothing there. and then below this - there is an unticked box that says 'this is a hidden network'

then on the 'next' page there is authentication which is WPA-PSK and data encryption which is TKIP

and then below those there is the network key which i have entered

Thanks again for your help,

Chris

Carny,

Now, we take it that first step is ok..

Second section, the wireless name should be greyed out and you cannot change,.. but the "connects to" box should not be blank and should allow you to select "the internet", instead of "work". But does it show your particular home wireless network.?
If not, then Menu > Add New and then proceed to configure your home wireless network accordingly.
"This is a hidden network box" can be left unchecked.
Also, under your configure wireless networks page, at the bottom, for networks to access box, select "only access points"
( the other options are "all available" and " only computer-to-computer - ignore both ).

If you are able to add & configure your home wireless network successfully, then you should be able to surf the net. Try to connect your device via wireless on its own ( not connected to your PC ).
Your network key must be keyed in exactly...

am still getting stuck on the second step.

below the wireless name there is the connects to tab however it is blank, i can't type anything in and when i click the arrow to drop it down, it drops down but with nothing inside!

Would a master reset help? - if so would i lose all my files that i have loaded onto it?

Thanks a lot for your time,

Chris

carney, I've been following this thread and Surfer88 has been giving you rock solid steps to get connected.  Make sure you have followed what he has offered.

I do have a question just to make sure.  When you go into Settings and the Connections Tab and ckick on the WiFi icon, is it showing your network in the list?  And does it say Connected to the right?"

Assuming YES is the answer to both, if you click on the Network Adapters Tab, it should say My network card connects to WORK.  Is that correct?

If you look down the list you should see the item that says: IEEE 802.11 b/g Compatible WiFi ... do you?

Click on it.  What do you see?

The only other thing I would add is that EVERYTHING should be set as your WORK connection.

One last thing.  I am assuming that your device automatically found your wireless connection (meaning that you DID NOT create it) ... is that correct?

Jack, thanks for monitoring this thread and your help to try to help carny on this one....

Carny, there are two things that I would like to highlight up to this point.

Firstly, if the drop down box is blank ( it normally enables you to pick either the internet or my work ), it would seem that your Belkin wireless settings had not been configured as yet. That was why I suggested that you try to add a new network as above, using wm6.1 assistance.

Secondly, on stoep two, Jack recommended that you set the settings to My Work instead of The Internet. Now, I had no trouble all along with The Internet, but when I changed the settings to My Work, there was also no problem in connecting to my home wifi. So, why not try to set to My Work in step two, to see whether any difference ?

Successful wifi connection depend on combination of many factors, such as the network operator ( settings and what not ), the wireless router, the signal strength, the device, the infamous wm6 package, third pary back ground applications and of course the device owner who ultimately must coordinate everything. And any one of these factors could cause the dreaded inability to connect...

But not to worry, Carny, I am very sure you will find the solution very soon. Just keep trying and try to "understand" the various settings and changes that you made. Wifi connection is one of the first hurdles that I had to overcome when first using my device. Same as you, it was indeed frustrating and it was a time for searching through the various forums, trying unsuccessful settings one after another. But suddenly, I could connect and everything fell into place.

We will offer you whatever assistance we can, until you set up or give up...

Cheers....
