So you have your first device and now you want to start “doing stuff”, like sending and receiving your email. It is a pretty simple process and within a few moments you will be sending (and receiving) your emails with your device.
Most folks like to start using their email capabilities using their personal accounts first and then move on to setting up their corporate email accounts. If this is your FIRST device then my advice is to “go slow”, do one thing at a time and once you’re comfortable, move on to the next item you want to accomplish. So let’s go through the setup of a POP3 email account.
For the most accounts that you might have (i.e. Comcast, Verizon etc) the E-mail Setup Wizard that will appear is the best way to setup your account. It is a painless process that works pretty well. There are a few instances that it will NOT be able to detect your account settings but my experiences have been very good so I would expect it to be the same for you. If the Auto Configuration does not work for you, obtain the settings for your email from your ISP and you will be able to enter them manually. So let’s get started!
Note: The following steps are based upon my Pocket PC Phone which is running Windows Mobile 6. Your device may be slightly different in the steps that you would follow depending on what OS it is using but the steps should be pretty much the same and easily recognizable on what you should do if there are differences.
1. Turn on your device and press Start. Then scroll to Messaging.
2. Select Outlook E-mail > Menu > Options > New Account.
3. You may be asked if your email source is a corporate Exchange server or some other e-mail provider. If your email provider is NOT on the list choose Other (for POP3).
4. Now a 5-step process will begin. Step 1: Enter your e-mail address.
5. After pressing NEXT, Step 2 will begin an auto configuration process. (It should last about 30 seconds or less.) When it says COMPLETED, press Next
6. Step 3 asks for your User information. Enter your Name, User name and password (check the box Save Password if you want it to be saved). Press Next.
7. Step 4 verifies the account information. You can rename the account name if you choose. Press Next.
8. Step 5 will show the Server information. Leave the Domain BLANK. Click the Option button.
9. Options will give you a 3 step process for connection. I would suggest accepting the default values. If needed, you can go back to change them. After step 3, Click Finish and you will be given the option to check your mail. Press Yes.
10. You should see a message indicting that you are Logging On and your mail should begin.
If by some chance the auto configuration did not detect the setting correctly, you can go back into the Menu, Press Tools, Options and Tap the name of your account. You will then be able to verify (and change if necessary) your settings.
Using a Sprint Mogul PPC, I am getting an error message when I send and receive email. I have set up a Pop3 email account, just like on my desktop PC. I can receive emails fine, but I get an error message and am not able to send any email messages. "The outgoing mail server cannot send or receive messages at this time. Try again later."
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I folowed your instructions...I am working with windows mobile 2003. I get an error message that says messages cannot be downloaded to my device. I am connected to the internet....I can browse web pages no problem. Any suggestions?
I have all of my server information correct, but I keep getting asked for my email's username and password. Then it tells me it can't download messages. In the email settings, it also appears that the password is wrong. It goes from being a short password to a long one?
Don;t worry about suddenly a long password. Your device automaticly will ad more ********** into your password when you review it. (maybe someone else is looking at it and it does not want to reveal how many characters you used.
In regards to the pop3 settings. Make sure to check your info ( you probably already did) But maybe the authendication box needs to be checked or unchecked. That could be the trick
When I click Menu > Tools, the New Accounts... option is disabled. How do I enable it? I have WM5 and only two accounts (one for work and one for text message).
just a quick question, i use a i-mate kjam, i was on contract but now on pay and go, can i still use this and any idea if it cost to download and send emails,
can anyone direct me to a thread where i can be helped to set up my wi-fi to connect to me netgear router and use the internet,
thanks...
Hey DPK3,
I'm having the exact same problem you were. I can recieve mail, but not send. Did you ever get your problem resolved? What was the solution?
Thanks,
