Question

Opening .pwi notes on Laptop

The PPC device (running WM 6) stores documents (Notes) in .pwi format. Any ideas as to how to open these documents on the laptop (running Vista and Office 2003) in Word (either .txt or .doc)? I am syncing using WMDC 6.1.6965

The .pwi files I have on the device are created in plain text (no ink, recordings, etc) using the device keyboard.

I have checked a lot of online groups but have not found anything that works.

Thanks much.

Answer

I think I figured it out.... I had the same problem as everyone here and just when I was about to give up, I was messing around and figured it out... Here's what I got:  I use Windows Vista and I have WM6.1 along with Office 2007.  The reason I needed to open the .pwi note that I created is because I created a digital signature that I want to paste into letters.... so I needed to make sure it wasn't converted to text or something.  So for those of you who want to be able to view scribbled pictures, this will work for you also.  Here is what I did to fix this mess:

  1. First I made the note on my phone
  2. Next I synchronized with Windows Mobile device center (make sure you have it set to synchronize notes.  To do this, once connected go to: Windows Mobile Device Center > Mobile Device Settings > Change Content Sync Settings > (check) Notes)
  3. Next, open outlook (I use outlook 2007 so hopefully this will still work for anyone who has a previous version)
  4. Then, click on "Notes" in the navigation pain (if it's not listed, click the small icons on the bottom to locate it)
  5. Now, locate your file and single click on it but do not open it
  6. Here's the fix:  Click File (At the top of Outlook; this will not work if you "right click" the note file, so you have to go to "File" at the top) > "Save as" and save it as a rich text format (.rtf) file anywhere you'd like....
  7. You should now be able to open the .rtf file in MSWord "as is" with no problems.... Worked for me and I hope for you as well!  Good luck.

I hope this helps.

Mike

Open windows doc->File->open->under file section select "Recover text from any file " then open the .PWI file .........Boom it will open in word doc but you will see some special character but you will see your text there......or if you have "Tahoma" font you can open the file i guess i have never tried these ..........

PWI files can be opened using Microsoft Word. Double clicking on file should have it automatically open in Word.

Thanks for the response Linley. If things were only so simple.

I tried all the basic stuff before posting my question. There is probably a missing "convertor" in Word 2003 and/or WMDC does not do the conversion when syncing the handheld to the laptop.

I hope some "expert" from Microsoft is monitoring this forum and responds (even if the response is - it cannot be done - which may make me switch back to a Palm based handheld).

Try this:

On your PC got to Start - Control Panel - Programs. Under Default Programs, Select Make a file type always open in a specific program. See if .PWI is listed there. If it is, then change the default program to Word.

I will investigate this further when I get home tonight.

Thanks again Linley. The default program for .pwi is already listed as Word. This is probably because when i first tried to open a .pwi file on my laptop it asked me to choose a program to open it with.

When I double click a .pwi file on my laptop Word 2003 opens up and it gives a dialog box "File Conversion - Auto Registration" with 3 options:

- Windows (Default)

- MS DOS

- Other Encoding

It does not matter what dialog box option I choose, there is just some "jibberish" that shows up.

Again, I am using Vista and Word 2003 on my laptop and WM6 and WMDM. All programs are up to date in terms of updates from the web. I don't know if there is a special "conversion" file I need to download from somewhere.

Do you get the same result when you Copy/Paste the file instead of synchronizing?

No difference. I get the same "jibberish" when I copy a Note from My Documents on handheld and paste it on my laptop and then try to open it with Word.

I hope Microsoft monitors these forums. Is there somebody from MS Mobile and/or Office group that can help? Or, maybe from the user community. Thanks.

I figured it out. Your Notes are in the Notes folder in Outlook.

Only if I use Outlook. Otherwise there is a backup/sync copy created on my laptop in the My Documents folder as .pwi files.

I understand, from other online forums, that previous versions of WM, Active Sync, and Word had a "convertor" for reading .pwi files in Word. I hope somebody from MS can point to a convertor for WM6, WMDM, and Word 2003.

I hope Microsoft is not implying/forcing customers to use Outlook.
