Windows mobile 6.1, outlook mobile, activesync mobile, and exchange server 2007 sync problem

Hello Everyone,

I was an early adapter of WM 6.1 on a motorola q9c phone. Every since I upgraded I have had problems with outlook on my phone syncing with exchange server 2007 on my job. I have trouble shot this for over a week with Sprint, Motorola, and my tech support department at my job.

The problem seems to be the connection for direct push email is not staying on. I can connect as I do have all my email in my inbox. I get the problem most often when trying to send an email, it becomes stuck in the outbox. The activesync program will activate but seemingly hang. Each attempt at syncing will actually send the message in the outbox but never clear it thus sending a message multiple times. Sometimes I get an error 0x8500200c and the activesync icon turns orange like with the arrows pointing away from each other. Other times it appears dormant with a time of last sync shown, yet the outbox is not cleared. When activesync get hung up doing the task a blank white screen shows up. Sometimes this screen will show up at random while I am doing other things on the phone.

I read a few things regarding the WM 6.1 has the exchange server service pack 1 and this some how has reduced the amount of time connecting to the server, but somehow I am having issues reconnecting properly. This problem did not exist at all with WM 6.0

I know I am using the right password as the whole thing will work if I try to send and email when the activesync is showing an active connection.

I have included in this post a pictorial account of the windows mobile 6.1 outlook activesync problem I am having. Hopefully it will clarify the problem in regards to the phone staying connected to the exchange server, particularly the blank white screen, and the message being stuck in the outbox.

Answer

Hi All,

Just want to give everyone a heads up that there is a fix for this now.

I had the exact same problem as everyone else was (Windows mobile 6.1, Active sync configured through eGap (IAG) Exchange 2007).

We ended up making a small code change on the "Activesynclogin.asp" file in my eGap 3.6.

Contact MS support, you should not get charged as it was a bug. (Dan Herzog and John Redding know the fix)

***Note this is an IAG/eGap fix

Thanks

I have the same phone (Motorola Q9c WM6.1) and the exact same problems that you are experiencing. We are running a mix of Exchange 2007 SP1 CAS and Mailbox servers and Exchange 2003 SP2 Mailbox servers here at our offices. We have 2 round robin Exchange 2007 CAS servers on the outside, I need to narrow this problem down to see if its one particular server this is happening on.

This problem did not exist when I was using a 2003 Mailbox and WM6.1, once i switched over to a 2007 mailbox I started to experience the problem with the random 0x8500200c error and the white box that pops up when sending email from the phone. I have yet to get it to happen regularly.

Microsoft just released Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB948016). I will be patching our servers next week. I have a a Verizon Q9m user that I can migrate to a 2007 mailbox and test further.

Thanks for the response. Please let me know what you find so we can post it for others to see. I imagine the problem is going to happen more frequently as more users migrate to WM 6.1 and interact with exchange server 2007.

We are seeing similar problems. I'll list a few things that we have noticed after a few days of testing.

  • The problems are occurring on both WM 6.0 and WM 6.1 phones.
  • I believe the problem is only occurring for Exchange 2007 users (not Exchange 2003 users).
  • Something that we have noticed, which appears to be slightly different than what is stated in the other posts, is that we only see this problem when REPLYING to notes via the phone. We do not see this problem when creating a NEW note on the phone.
  • Some users see the blank activesync screen one time. For these users the email does get sent, but from that point on the direct push functionallity gets disabled even though it looks as if the user is still "Connected". Doing a manual sync seems to get things back working again.
  • Some users (including me) always have two email messages sent. This corresponds to two blank activesync screens. What is really strange is that one of these email messages will be sent in HTML format where as the second note gets sent in TEXT format. Hopefully this tidbit of information might help someone figure out why/how this is occurring.  To explain a little more in detail, if I reply (while on my phone) to an email....

1) I will see a blank activesync screen. At this time my reply is actually sent and it will be in HTML format.

2) I hit the OK button to clear the activesync screen.

3) A few seconds later another blank activesync screen appears. At this time a second reply gets sent, but this one will be in TEXT format.

4) I hit the OK button to clear the activesync screen, then the normal activesync process seems to complete.

5) At this time even though it appears that I am still "connected" my direct push functionality will not work. The only way to fix this is to do a manual sync.

6) If I look in the Outbox on my phone I will see the email. Most likely, this email will be sent again.

One additional piece of information. If I go into my Outbox (on my phone) and open the note, then close it, it will disappear.

Let me know if you have questions or need more details. Hopefully some of these strange happenings will trigger something with someone.

Hello,
i have a similar problem with windows mobiel 6.1
we have a exchange 2003 enviroment and an 2007 test enviroment.
They are completly isolated.

Following test were done:

Mobile Devices 6.0 no problem on server 2007 and server 2003
Mobile Devices 6.1 no problem on server 2003
Mobile Devices 6.1 copy of sent message stay in outbox, but send successfully.
The mail copy is in outbox as an html mail and raw text mail.

On Exchange 2007 we have SP1 installed.

Any idea how to solve it? is there a fix for mobile 6.1 or exchange?

No one has found a solution yet to the best of my knowledge, but this really needs to get bumped up to microsoft quickly. I imagine many people use the email regularly particularly in business and this is a very unfortunate problem.

I'm testing the new HTC Touch Diamond (wm6,1), and the company is running Server 2007 - I have exactly the same problem with the mails getting stuck in the outbox, and keep on resending itself ...

If anyone find the solution, please let me know

Best Rgds

I've had this problem since WM6.1 first came out for the AT&T Tilt. I've always thought it was a problem with the phone/rom or our Exchange 2007 setup since WM6.1 was meant to be paired up with Exchange 2007, or at least I thought so.

Our setup:

  • 3 sites, each with CAS, HT, and mailbox servers - all on Exchange 2007 SP1 with Update Rollup 2.
  • 1 of thee sites contains a "internet facing" CAS box with CAS proxying fully set up and working. This CAS box has 2 virtual directories for OWA, Active-Sync, Autodiscover, etc.. and applied with a 3rd party cert.

Results:

  • OWA proxy to any site and WM6.0 and earlier all works perfectly fine.
  • With a WM6.1 phone or Windows Mobile 6.1 emulator, the followings are seen:
    • Syncing after replying or sending a new email, a white Activesync screen appears with the only option to OK out. The email is then "stuck" in the Outbox on the phone. Every subsequent sync will show the same white screen and resend all messages in the Outbox, resulting in ultimate spamage.
    • If the email is manually deleted from the Outbox AND deleted from the Deleted Items folder, the next sync is fine again.
    • Nothing out of the ordinary shows up in the IIS logs of the internet facing CAS box. However, on the proxied CAS box, there will be a HTTP error 401 followed by an OK 200 for all the syncs with the white screen. After deleting the emails, only HTTP 200 responses show up for syncs.
    • There doesn't seem to be any apparent issues with texting.

After reading we're not alone in this, I've decided to submit a case with MSFT myself. I've received a response from MSFT stating it is a known issue with a CAS proxy setup in combination with WM6.1. I've sent them my findings (IIS logs) as well as created an account for the support tech to duplicate this on their end as a vanilla Windows Mobile 6.1 emulator rom has the same issue.

I've been told they will hopefully get a hotfix out in about 2~3 weeks. I'll post here when I receive something.

We started seeing these problems as soon as we moved a few users to Exchange 2007. These users are still on Windows Mobile 6.0 devices. In our case it seems to be an Exchange 2007 issue, not a Windows Mobile 6.1 issue.
