Hi SteveBarn

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

We apologize for the delayed response.  I understand you are getting an error on Windows Live Mail after upgrading to Windows 8.1.  Let me help you.

As basic troubleshooting, please remove your Microsoft account on Windows Live Mail.  Then delete the stuck emails on your Outbox
(click "Work Offline" to do this).  Then reconfigure the Microsoft account on Windows Live Mail by following the instructions on the article below:

How do I add an account to Windows Live Mail?

If you still encounter the same error message, please check out the following article and follow the troubleshooting steps:

How can I resolve machine configuration issues in Windows Live Mail?

Let us know how things turn out.

Regards,

Leah V.

Hello nijode,

I understand that you are having some sort of issues on Windows Live Mail and followed the instructions provided by Leah. In order for us to further assist you with your concern, I would like to ask a couple of questions to help us investigate your issue further.

- What exact error message are you seeing?

- Are you using a Microsoft account on your Windows Live Mail?

- Is this account able to send and receive emails using the web browser?

- If you are using a third party email account, did you try to contact your domain administrator regarding this?

Kindly provide us as much details as possible so that we can provide you the possible solution with your issue.

We will be waiting for your response.

Thank you.

Thank you for responding. I am running Windows 8 and using windows live which I like, liked, very much. When I recently upgraded to 8.1 0r 8.2, I did not pay close attention as I trusted Microsoft to know best, Live Mail quit working. I first noticed that some but not all of my email accounts on Road Runner were not working. I checked all the settings and all seemed to be correct. Then I realized that emails received on either my Live or Hotmail email accounts were being received with subject only and this message,
"Message could not be displayed

Windows Live Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

There should be more than enough memory available. I tried reloading Live Mail and saw no change. I think that I should first delete Live Mail and then reload it but I don't want to lose all my old emails, I do not utilize the "cloud."

I, last night, installed another email client, Thunderbird, a Mozilla product. It works fine so I am no longer in the dark,(thank you George Clooney), but I do not like it as much as Live Mail and it does not have my old emails.

Any ideas???

Hello,

We advice that you save your emails first in a safe folder before uninstalling/re-installing Windows Live Mail. To know how to import and export e-mails, please check this link.

Afterwards, you can follow the steps below on how to uninstall/re-install Windows Essentials:

1. Perform Windows Update
2. Uninstall Essentials by following the steps within this
link.

3. Delete the following files for a clean installation:

For 32 bit

C:\Program Files\Windows Live

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows Live

For 64 bit

C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Live

C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Windows Live

4. Disable firewall (Note that disabling the firewall makes your computer prone to virus attack. We suggest that you only visit the websites below and enable your firewall after installation is done).

5. Reset browser to factory settings.

6. Reinstall Windows Essentials:

Windows Essentials 2012 (for Windows 7 and Windows 8)

Windows Essentials 2011 (for Windows Vista and Windows 7)

Note: Please read the system requirements before installing Windows Essentials 2012.

If this did not solve your issue, please give us an update for us to further investigate your concern.

Thank you.

I had also the following error (German error message) in Windows Live Mail 2009, after I have updated from WinPro 8.0 to 8.1 :

"Es konnten keine Nachrichten für das Konto Mike gesendet oder empfangen werden. Ein unbekannter Fehler ist aufgetreten.

Server: 'pop.gmx.net'
Windows Live Mail-Fehlernummer: 0x800C013E
Protokoll: POP3
Port: 995
Secure (SSL): Ja"

Problem: I could send emails, but I couldn't receive emails.

Solution:

I have made a back up of my email, contacts and the other email accounts.

After that I have deleted the following folder:
c:\Users\myUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\

Problem solved after I have started Windows Live Mail 2009 again. (should also work with later versions, but I prefer the classic design)

Perhaps you have luck and this information will help you to solve your problem too.

Greetings from Germany

Mike

Yes I tried uninstalling and re-installing Microsoft Essentials 2012, that didn't work either. All the Accounts and settings were still there. I deleted all files in the c:\Users\myUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\  file, and set up my email accounts again in Windows Live Mail. It worked and fixed the problem, but all my saved emails are gone from the Storage folder I had them in. So now I have a working email account but lost all saved emails. Tried importing them and still no saved emails anywhere. Oh well, I guess I am starting over again thanks to a poor Windows 8.1 upgrade program.

Steve wrote "Tried importing them and still no saved emails anywhere. "

I also thought I would have lost my emails because I couldn't find the imported emails.

Perhaps you have the same blindness like me:

The imported emails are there! I can't remember the folder name, but it was something like "import folder" where all my imported emails has been stored after import of the backup.

From this folder I have copied all my emails to the right folders in my email account.
