When I open windows live mail, the e-mail content become attachment of .txt format or .htm format.

I cannot preview the e-mail in the reading pane.

I need to click to open the .htm and read the e-mail in IE.

It would help if you told us which operating system you're using and which version of Internet Explorer.

If you type shell:cache into the start search box and press Enter, you should see an Explorer window open at the Temporary Internet Files folder. Right-click on that folder in the navigation pane and select Properties. What are the numbers for Files, Folders and Size on disk?

You may have to select Show hidden files, folders and drives and to deselect Hide protected operating system files at Control Panel > Folder Options > View to be able to see the contents of the TIF folder.

This trick works :
First creating a new, empty TIF folder might be anywhere.
  1. Under Internet Options, click the Settings button under Browsing history and then Move folder and select your new created folder.

Some programs, notably Windows Live Mail, deposit files in the TIF folder and never remove them. With IE9 onwards, the permanent solution is to empty the TIF folder regularly.

I had a similar problem as follows:

  • New computer scrambled HTML messages from one source
  • Messages showed the Email content as ATT00001.htm
  • HTML message was not shown in correct format
  • Old computer showed HTML messages correctly from the same source

Solution:

  • After trying everything else, problem was tracked down to Kapersky Internet security
  • Disabling the "Anti-Spam" feature corrected the problem

I have had this problem for a while, on and off.

I just fixed it, that is: identified and fixed it.

I have a number of drives on this machine, one is dedicated to temp, temporary etc files.

I occasionally remove that disk, typically when upgrading.

Then there is no temporary location. Posts turn into attachments!!

So check your windows temporary files point to a valid drive (directory??).

control panel -system - advanced system settings - environment variables

I just added a clean drive with the right drive letter, and magically a windows temp directory appears, and all the post attachments reappeared as posts.

Sorted!
