windows live photo gallery crashes video card in windows 8

Windows Essentials "Photo Gallery" will crash my NVidia graphics driver every time I use the "Fine Tune" set of features. I have a GTX560Ti from Asus. This happens with the Stock Windows 8 driver all the way through the latest beta driver. It doesn't matter if I use Windows Live Essentials 2011 or Windows Essentials 2012. I'm using a fresh install of Windows 8 Release Preview. Anyone know why this is happening or what's going on here?

Here is a screen shot of the features in question.

Hi jesseinsf94122,

Just to verify, does the issue happen on other applications aside from Photo Gallery?

Also, please provide us log files for Movie Maker. I have sent you a private message for the instructions. After uploading the logs, please notify us in this thread.

Thanks!

same exact problem here. Installed latest version of Windows Essentials PhotoGallery and have the latest NVidia drivers 302.80-desktop-win8-64bit on Windows 8. Using the controls to fine tune color, tint etc leads to a crash of the display driver. In my case I get a system notification in the system tray reporting problems with the display driver and that it recovered. Once I click that away it comes right back. Sometimes I can read the message, most times all windows that open from here on are plain black.

I have to log out and in to get back to normal. While the display driver crashes the CPU is on full power and the system very non-responsive. Adjusting tint and color in other programs such as Corel PaintShop Pro works perfectly fine and does not crash the display driver.

System: Core i9 920, 9Gb Ram, 120Gb Agility 3 SSD (OS), Windows 8 64bit. NVidia GT 520

edit1: didn't see there were newer drivers GeForce 302.82 Driver. Trying now.
edit2: after installing the newer driver PhotoGallery still crashes but not as bad as before.
the system tray windows shows a red circle with white cross:
Display driver stopped responding and has recovered
Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 302.82 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

edit3: when I play with the controls it seems to only freeze when I move from saturation or color to tint faster than 1sec. If I give it some time in between it lets me work on it for a while until it freezes.
Also, if I ignore the display driver message in the system tray the program doesn't crash entirely. It recovers after a few seconds and lets me work on the same image again.

It also happens with the all the NVidia drivers, from stock drivers to the latest beta drivers. I don't have any other Applications that will do the same. I even tried Picasa and it didn't crash the video drivers.

Hi thegreatdeceiver and jesseinsf94122,

We would like you to perform the following steps to isolate the possible cause of this issue. Please try to run Photo Gallery with compatibility mode in Windows 7. To do this, please follow these steps:

1. Press the Windows Logo button on keyboard and type Photo Gallery.

2. Right-click on Photo Gallery and click Open file location.

3. Select Photo Gallery shortcut then right-click on it and choose Open file location.

4. Look for WLXPhotoGallery then right-click on it and choose Properties.

5. Click Compatibility tab and then under Compatibility mode tick the checkbox  to Run this program in compatibility mode for: once you have checked it, the drop list down option below will be enabled.

6. On the drop list down option, choose Windows 7 and click Apply and OK  to save the changes.

Once this has been done, please try to open your Photo Gallery and check if the issue still occurs.

Thank you.

First the Start menu search only points to the shortcut folder. So I went in the x86 program files folder and found the file that you wanted us to modify. I tried Windows 7 mode for compatibility and the same thing happened. So then I also chose to "Open as Administrator" and the same thing happened. My computer also blue screened. No luck either way. I also uninstalled+reboot+reinstalled and nothing helped.

I can confirm that the display driver crash still occurs. No changes. After changing the compatibility mode to Windows 7 and opening WLXPhotoGallery I am greeted with a message that a new MS Camera Codec Pack is available and to download and apply it. If I try that it downloads the package and after running the package installer it gives an error message that the version of the codec pack is not compatible with Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 and that the codec will be available through Windows Update.
additional note. Windows 7 64bit was upgraded to Windows 8 64bit. Maybe the result will be different on a freshly installed system.

Actually, I did a fresh install, so I don't think the upgrade is part of the problem. But please do tell us if you are going to reformat with a fresh copy because I'd like to know your results. :-)
