How to Disable OneDrive in Windows 10

Technical Level : Basic

Summary

This article explains how to disable OneDrive from Windows 10.

You'll need to determine whether you're running the 32 or 64-bit version of Windows 10. If you're unsure which one you're running, launch the Settings app and head to the "System" section. Under "System Type", the version is displayed.

Details

1. Open an elevated command prompt window (open the Start menu and type cmd, then right-click the result and click Run as Administrator)

2. In the command prompt window, type the following command and hit Enter:

taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe

3. Next, type one of the following commands and hit Enter, depending on which version of Windows you have:

Windows 10 x64:

%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall

Windows 10 x32:

%SystemRoot%\System32\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall

OneDrive is now disabled.

What if I don't have a One Drive icon on my notification area? I can't seem to get into One Drive to access the settings, but my computer still wants to save things to it!

I am on Windows 10 (32 bit) and Office 2010. OneDrive is active on my system I think? I have tried to follow the above instructions to stop it, but cannot find the settings for OneDrive. It was not 'optional' at the time of upgrading.

I have an email from OneDrive to say that it will no longer allow 15GB storage etc etc and now only 5GB. I must pay if I want more. They have not replied to my questions about this.

I am now experiencing Outlook crashing saying that my SkyDrive email .pst file is 'in use' and in some instance Outlook cannot open at all. No other programs are running on my PPC at this time.

Is SkyDrive/OneDrive an absolute necessity with Windows 10. If Microsoft is forcing us to use it, how can they now charge extra for it?

Charles

First, my OneDrive settings don't have an "unlink" option on the settings tab (and doesn't have several of the tabs shown above; see screenshot). Second, the posted registry edit link returns an error (see screenshot). Is it possible to post the actual registry edit? Thank you.

Try this:

1. Open an elevated command prompt (right-click the start menu click Command Prompt (Admin)

2. Type in taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe to kill any open OneDrive processes and then hit Enter.

3. Type in %SystemRoot%\System32\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall if you’re using 32-bit Windows 10 or %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall if you’re using 64-bit Windows 10 and hit Enter.

I have updated the download link in the article, and will move to update the article instructions soon. Note that the download in the article will remove the OneDrive link from Windows Explorer's sidebar and does not disable OneDrive itself.

There is not a lot of point providing a link to a OnDrive file for the download for people who are removing Onedrive presumably because they don't want to use it!

It appears that with the February 2017 release of Windows 10 Home that OneDrive is now asking for a password even though the use of OneDrive was already disabled.  How can one permanently stop OneDrive from starting?  The procedure shown does not work in my case.
