Windows Update does not work after a new install of Windows XP SP2

I use to be able to load my Windows XP SP2 on a newly formatted HDD and then click on Windows Update to download all of the updates without a glitch.  Not so anymore.  I spent the better part of this week trying to get it to work but without success.  Could someone at Microsoft tell us the steps that must be followed now because the ones that used to work no longer do.  Obviously something has changed at the Microsoft end that prevents us from updating our new install the way we used to.  May I suggest that Microsoft reverts its Window Update site to a previous time i.e. one that works.  Hopefully, all of this is not intended to move us off Windows XP in the near term.
