Trying to update to Service Pack 3, but update fails when trying to install/copy wma file Beethovan's Symphony No.9 (Scherzo). How can I get around this issue?

When trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 3, when it gets to trying to install/copy wma file beethov9.wma, it fails, even though I indicate to by-pass it and continue with the install.

Hi,

1.        Are you getting any error message?

2.        Have you installed windows service pack 2 on your computer?

I would suggest you to follow the steps provided below and check if it helps.

This did not help.  The message I am getting is:

"An error occurred while copying file beethov9.wma."

"Can not copy file to destination directory"

"Click Retry to retry the operation or click Cancel to cancel"

When I clicked Cancel, this message appeared:

"Do you wnat ot continue setup with out copying this file?  Yes or No"

When I clicked "yes", it does not bypass installing this file, but fails later.

Check the setupapi.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder) for error codes.

Start at the bottom and work your way back up and see if there are any "Access Denied" errors.

Hi Bill_F,

Thank you for the above information.

Method 1: I would suggest you to try installing the windows XP service pack 3 with administrator privileges and check.
a. Right-click on the setup file and select Run as administrator.

Method 2: Also I would suggest you to set your computer in Clean Boot state and then try manually installing windows XP service pack 3.

By setting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Windows XP service pack 3: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=10767

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting step, follow the “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state” in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

 Hope this information is helpful.
