Question

windows XP expired

I didn't use my computer for about a month.  The last time I used it was to update Spybot.  When I tried 2 days ago to use my
computer it came up with a notice that I had 3 days to re-register my copy of windows XP because I had not used it for a length of time.   When I tried to get on line I keep getting the no modem detected message.  When I try to test my modem I
get no modem present/  What is going on with my system and how can I reconnect?  I also want  to add I tried system restore to no avail.  Also I am getting notices of new PCI device found and do I want to install now and I have no idea whats
going on

Firstly, Windows XP registration is not time limited & does not run out just because you don't use your pc. The message is therefore a fake one to get you to log on to the internet.

Be thankfull that you couldn't get online

I reckon you caught a trojan, keylogger, virus or some such. Run full scans using Spybot & whatever Anti-virus software you use before trying to connect to the internet.

The new PCI device is probably your modem (assuming it is an internal modem), which Windows appears to have "lost" for some reason. Don't reinstall it until you have run Spybot & your Antivirus scans.

When you update Spybot do you then re-immunise your pc? If not, you should always do so, as immunisation provides static spyware protection.
