There is no need to post the same question in multiple forums. Here is the same answer I already gave you in the other forum: it's a scam.

We need a better answer Malkeleah!

So is Comantra is a scam.  Well they also are a Microsoft Certified Partner or not?  While I was very hesitant to do anything this guy was saying, he did know my name and phone, claimed he was working in conjunction with Microsoft and claimed to have received an alert indicating an infection with a Malyasian Virus. I played along until he suggested that I upload some software. He even bothered to prove to me he is a Microsoft Certified Partner.

They are listed as a MS certified partner (https://solutionfinder.microsoft.com/Partners/PartnersDirectory.aspx?location=b1f2621939d945e6a1fc835c4bcf2668&keywords=comantra).  I checked out their website while I was talking to the guy and they do provide remote support services so I figured they just want to extract dollars.

I want to know if Microsoft is giving out our names to this firm as a Certified Partner. If so how do I opt out of this program?

What's up?  Yeah you say it's a scam, but they seem to be working through Microsoft.  Maybe you should Decertify them until they change their practices.  We don't appreciate the calls telling us that our computers are virus filled.

Yeah I did see the MS disclaimer:  "The partners listed in Solution Finder are members of the Microsoft Partner Program. Microsoft, however, does not endorse the partners or their software, solutions, services and training listed on this site. Microsoft disclaims any and all liability arising out of your use of the partners software, solutions, services and training listed on the site. All software, solutions, services and training are provided “as is” and without warranty unless provided by the authoring partner."

But it does seem that there is a complicity in having a service that works with Scammers.

get real.

I can't speak for Microsoft since I don't work for the company. So I can't do anything about this except tell you that I've heard it's a scam. If you want to contact MS directly about them, here is the contact page:

I have just been called by Comantra and if I was not PC savvy I would easily have been conned. This scam is well documented on the Internet. I sent a complaint Email to MS and got an automated reply. I called their Customer Service 0844002400 only to be told that "they don't endorse MS Certified Partners" ...odd ...what's the point of becoming one then; I was also told, unconvincingly that it would be reported "to the higher authorities"; I think the MS Call Centre is also in India, where Comantra operate from, but on their website they do have UK phone numbers.

I'm amazed that Bill Gates old company hasn't come down like a ton of bricks on this company.

Has BBC Watchdog investigated them?

They are a Microsoft partner, they are on this site: https://solutionfinder.microsoft.com/ click on 'india' in the dropdown. Click search, click the 'Partners' tab, type in 'Comantra' and then their page will be listed.

I don't understand how Microsoft lets them be a Gold Partner as the clearly are a scam site and they use this 'Gold Partnership' to scam customers!

I have just seen this in my local newspaper. it is very disturbing. (I have deleted the lady's details for obvious reasons)

A NEWPORT pensioner is warning other elderly people to be vigilant after being targeted by a telephone conman.

Mrs J, of XXXXXXXXX, said she first received a call from the Indian man on June 28.

She was warned that her computer had a problem with it and the man told her to turn her laptop on.

He asked her to press various buttons and after about half-an-hour, the 76-year-old was told her computer could be looked after by the 'Comantra' company for £50 a month, free for five years.

She claimed the man then said he was going to charge her £275 for the work he had just carried out on her computer.

Feeling pressured, Mrs J said she started crying as she does not have much money but gave the man her card details.

Shortly after, the pensioner, rang her bank HSBC to cancel her card, but a representative said as she gave her details to the man herself they could not get her money back.

The former garage cashier has also tried ringing the salesman to retrieve her money, but so far he has refused to hand over the money.

Mother-of-four Mrs J said  due to the stress of losing the money she recently fell out of bed.

To add to her worries, her son Tim was recently diagnosed with cancer.

She says she has not slept properly since.

"I would rather have given the money to my children," she said.

Mrs J informed local Police about the incident, but a spokeswoman said that no criminal offence was committed.

She has since contacted  Trading Standards, as she is still getting similar calls on a regular basis.

These are definately a scam, they charged my grandparents £250, and they asked for a refund, so my nan asked me to go over and go through the refund process with them, and they wanted me to re-enter details, and at the end they wanted to charge their card a further £89.99 to validate the account they were supposedly going to refund.

Scam but very clever if you are not a tech:

They spent 25 minutes taking me through event viewer and telling me that the red and yellow items in my events proved that I had corruption.

As somebody else already posted:

http://veryverybored.blogspot.com/2010/06/comantra-scam-tech-support-call.html

Use my computer co,puter managment to luanch event viewer

Count the reds and yellows "Applications", but do not take any interest in what the error report says. These logs are the result of "corrupted software that gets downloaded from the internet without my knowing"

Do the same in system.

Of course, no-one would be so stupid as to allow someone to connect to their PC from an unsolicited call, so reassurance can be found by

1) Entering "Microsoft Partners Directory" into Google
2) Searching for "Comantra" - lo and behold, my unsolicited caller who says that he works for Comantra must be bona-fide because they are listed on the Microsoft site.

The use run to launch pccure.net

(whois:Thinktech software Co. PV Ltd - who produce the comantra site

This takes me to a commantra.net/connect.php which goes to a logmein

Once I got the 6 digit code I was transfered to a Microsoft certified engineer. I asked the woman (who had taken me through 20 minutes) of this stuff whether this person I was being transferred to was employed by Microsoft and she told me "yes".

The engineer told me the same rubbish that my computer was infected and that's why it ran slowly.

He told me about the wonders of their service - free fixes any time and
I could also get any software I wanted for free. When I asked if this was all free how could they make any money he "said other departments."

At this point, I told him that I was a former MS Gold partner myself and that I would ask the police to investigate since everything they had said was deceitful. I also said they clearly weren't very nice people. He wanted to argue I hung up.

I hope the 25 minute call cost them something - but I bet they were VOIPing.

From their website - definitely a new definition of ethical.

"Good news is that now, quality echnical support is just a “click” away – www.comantra.net "

My mother (77) got one of these calls. She decided that if Microsoft wanted to talk to her, they should talk to me and didn't do what they said.

If these people really are MS partners it is appalling that they are allowed to continue
