How to connect XP to a hidden wireless network?

I try to connect to a hidden wireless network but I can't find anywhere that I can enter the network name.  Please advise!

I have to have the network visible for selection before I can connect to them.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 provide for that?  Is there any similar option available with XP?

After I once have the XP Home connected to the wireless network, I then disabled the SSID Broadcast.  I then find the XP could never connect to the hidden network again unlike Windows 7 or Windows Vista.  Is there something I miss?

Answer

Hi,

A hidden network is a wireless network that is set to not broadcast its name (or service set identifier (SSID)). Normally, wireless networks broadcast their name, and your computer “listens” for the name of the network that it wants to connect to. Since a hidden network doesn’t broadcast, your computer can't find it, so the network has to find your computer.

Try these steps to connect to Hidden Wireless Network on a Windows XP Machine.

a.     Click the Start button and select Control Panel.

b.    Double-click Network Connections.

c.     Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

d.    Select the Wireless Networks tab. Be sure the option Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked and click Add.

e.     Enter your network settings:

                      i.        Network name (SSID)

ii.        Select your security level in the Data encryption drop-down menu (Open for no security, or WEP, WPA, or WPA2).

iii.        Uncheck The key is provided for me automatically (This enables you to input your encryption key/passphrase).

                    iv.        Click OK.

f.        Confirm your network is listed in Preferred networks and click OK.

Hope the information provided helps.
