Vista will not install SP1 using Windows Update (Do it Manually)

Hi

Revised.

If you have a Vista without SP1 and or 2, DO NOT listen to Microsoft techs and use auto updates / windows update / microsoft update (untill after you have installed SP1&SP2).

From my recent experience and other posts, it will not work.  Manually download Vista SP1 and Vista SP2 and manually install (SP1 First).  I wasted hours with auto updates that I did not need and made a mess.

Vista SP1

Vista SP2

You need both, SP1 first

Read below if you want the details.  THANKS

I just did a custom wipe of a perfectly good XP machine using a Vista Utilmate DVD.

After installing it did ~106 automatic updates, and now is stuck on Vista SP1.

Updates keep offering it, downloading it, but I can not get it to install.  About 5 or 6 times now.  It will take me to the user agreement, and after I agree it says installation will take a while, but it never loads.  Once I got an error stating I needed IE 8, but when I downloaded that for XP/Vista, I got the error that IE 8 will not run on my system.

I have just maually downloaded SP1 and SP2 to machine, may try to install, but MS advised against it some BS about something and I should give them $189.  I was hoping someone might have an idea on how to get the auto update function to work for know if my manual Visat SP1 and SP2 (from MS official site) might work 1st.  MS support was no real help other than they suggested buying Windows 7 at Walmart, but I do not think the old machine is worth the $86 dollars.  They should not tell you online that they will support vista till 2017, then try to charge you after you invested time in it.  They may even do it on purpose (not the techs, but the managment).

If you read this, thanks for your support.
