New instructions for setting up Winbdows mail with Comcast are at this page:
http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/FAQListViewer.aspx?topic=Internet&folder=6f4541ab-5423-47fb-a700-10806518e4d7

The important part is that you set the smtp port to 587 - people seem to be missing this.

I had all the settings correct and still experienced an error. Here is what I found...
If you have all the settings correct, your anti-virus program may be blocking outgoing mail.

You will see an error like this from Windows Live Mail:

A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server.

Subject 'blah blah blah'
Server: 'smtp.comcast.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC15
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 587
Secure(SSL): No

If you use McAfee, here is how to fix the problem. If you have other anti-virus software, the process is probably similar.

Check your on-access scan log (usually r-click the McAffee OAS icon in the notifications area of your system - lower-right, with system clock)
In the log file, search for the phrase wlmail.exe. If McAfee is blocking the outgoing mai, you'll see a log entry like this:

Blocked by port blocking rule  C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe Anti-virus Standard Protection:Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail

To stop McAfee from blocking mail:

R-click the McAfee icon again, then click VirusScan Console.
R-click Access Protection, then click Properties.
Select Antivirus Standard Protection
In the Rules list, select "Prevent mass-mailing worms from sending mail"
Click Edit
Under "Processes to exclude", add wlmail.exe to the list.
Click OK, then OK.

It took me quite a while to figure this all out, so I thought someone else should benefit. I'm also going to email comcast and mcafee support this info. This seems to be a common problem.

Those directions say to use port 587 for the outgoing (SMTP) server. You have port 25, so change it.

Just follow Comcast's published directions:

http://www.comcast.com/Customers/FAQ/FaqDetails.ashx?Id=2288

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail use the same settings as Outlook Express.

I have entered everything as published but still I am unable to send messages.... this is what I get. Should the port number be different? This is the default one. The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Thank you for the information on configuring the exclusion in McAfee, that is what was causing my issue with comcast and windows live mail.   The only addition I will add to your solution is that even with the wlmail.exe exclusion, I had to change the smtp port back to its original 25 as it was not working with port 587.

Thanks again!

I am running Windows 7. I just switched over to Comcast. Set up my new email using Windows Live Mail according to the instructions on your link. All workes well, except,
If I just go into my email account in Windows Live Mail and try to send a message it wantes my password. Thats annoying. I can understand if I want to download message from Comcast.

In tools, account, on the servers tab I have (
My server requires authentication checked) and in the settins I have (Use same settings as my incoming mail server checked) but when I go back in later and check that mark has moved down to (Log on using, and in the e-mail username is my username) I never put that there. I have changed it back several times put it changes back. WHAT GOES? Thanks
