Windows Defender won't start; WMI repository is consistent.

My Windows Defender on Vista (home) will not start, and I've tried troubleshooting it multiple times. I've run the winmgmt/verifyrepository and it always comes back with "repository is consistent." So what now?

Hi,

1. What exactly happens when you try to start Windows Defender?
2. When was it last working fine?
3. Did you make any hardware/software changes on your computer prior to this issue?

I would suggest you to try the below steps.

Step 1: Check if windows defender service is running and set to automatic.

a. Click on Start button.
b. Click on Run and type services.msc.
c. Now look for the service named Windows Defender.
d. Double click to bring up the Properties window.
e. Set the Startup type to Automatic
f. Click Apply then click Start
g. Click OK and then Close Services windows.

Step 2: Check if the issue persists in clean boot state.
Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Try the steps provided under Step 1 in the below article to put your computer in clean boot mode.

Step 3: Run a system restore back to a date and time prior to when windows defender was working fine.
