Hello njw9317,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Vista Community site.

I suggest Try  doing a SFC and then  system restore if that does not work:

System File Checker

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.     Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

  • sfc /scannow

4.     You should see the following on-screen messages:

  • Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.
  • Beginning verification phase of system scan.
  • Verification % complete.

5.     Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

  • …found no integrity violations
  • found corruption but repaired it
  • found corruption that it could not repair

6.     Please reply with the completion message that you received.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps.

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
    Continue.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  5. Click OK.
  6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
  7. After the computer starts, start the game or program and check whether the problem is resolved.

Pasted from <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796>

This should resolve your problem.

Let us know if these steps resolve your problem.  I hope the information is useful.

Hello Anthony. I have been searching all of Microsoft & the internet for help with my windows installer...It "...stops working".

When i found this page I performed what you suggested above- 'system file checker'. The results were 'windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log...'

I found the cbs log but access is denied when i try to open it.

I'd appreciate any help you could give me. Thank You

Windows Installer does not work for me. I cannot use any installation that calls for a system restore point.
All such attempts hang.  When I attempt to look at system restore points on the system protection page
the system hangs. This is with Vista Enterprise SP2. Automatic updates hang in installation. I have no
problem with any feature that has been successfully installed except that Quicken Home and Business Billminder
fails about 1/5 of times after reboot.

SFC produces no error messages.

I have disabled system restore using gpedit.msc, rebooted, deleted System Volume Information, unconfigured system restore, rebooted.
I still have the problem.

Thus my VISTA Enterprise is FROZEN IN TIME but otherwise applications work.

I recently downloaded Office Ultimate 2007. I successfully installed it in my XP desktop without any problems. I cannot install it in my Vista Home laptop, however. I have tried using the same software, downloading a new version of it, and even giving up to install the trial version that came with my computer. Each time I get the same message near the end of the installation process: Windows Installer has Stopped Working.

I tried SFC. No error messages. What else can I do? I seem to be stuck with the same problem as the original poster...

C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I was finally able to get to sfc/scannow by searching for cmd and then keying it in at the command prompt. Details of corrupt files are in the CBS.log.  What do I do now?
