I regularly get a popup message saying wmplayer.exe has encountered a problem. The thing is I have not run wmplayer.exe. When I use proxexp.exe to see what's going on, I can see that the crashed wmplayer.exe has been launched by mobsync.exe.
Now the question is why is mobsync.exe running wmplayer.exe?
Also how do I stop it or mobsync.exe from being running wmplayer.exe or failing that stop mobsync.exe from being run?
Thanks
Hi Austin,
There shouldn’t be any problem by turning off Portable Device Enumerator Service. As stated earlier, this enables applications such as Windows Media Player and the Image Import Wizard to transfer and synchronize content using removable mass-storage devices.
For example, if you plugin a USB stick containing pictures, then you might not get the Image Import Wizard which upon clicking will import all your photos to your Windows Photo Gallery. So, the process is not automated and you need to manually import the photos to Windows Photo Gallery. Similarly, when you plugin a USB stick that contains music files, a wizard will pop-up that would ask you to sync the music files with Windows Media Player. You wouldn’t get that wizard and you need to manually sync the music files by opening windows media player and following the sync instruction wizard to sync music files.
If you don’t want to lose this functionality, then here is a work around that lets you disable mobsync.
1. Click on Start menu and click on Control Panel.
2. Click on Network and Internet.
3. Next Click on Offline files.
4. In the Offline Files window, click on the Disable Offline Files button and click Ok.
5. A restart is required and after that, it should be disabled and you don’t see it in prosexp.exe
Hope this information is helpful.
Post your results back.

Hi Third_of_Five,
Check if you receive this pop-up message by booting into Safe mode?
1. Use F8 while restarting the computer.
2. Under Windows Advanced Boot Options, select Safe mode and press Enter.
If you do not receive any message, then restart the computer and perform a clean boot to find the culprit behind this cause.

Note: Do not forget to put the computer back to a normal startup once you’re able to find the conflicting software.
On further research on this issue, I came to know that mobsync is a Microsoft owned tool which enforces group policy for removable mass-storage devices. It simply enables applications such as Windows Media Player and Image Import Wizard to transfer and synchronize content using removable mass-storage devices.
If performing a clean boot fails to find the culprit, then follow the steps to disable mobsync.
1. Click on Start; in the start search type services.msc
2. Scroll down the page until you locate a service called Portable Device Enumerator Service, then double click on it.
3. In the General tab, change the ‘Startup Type' to Manual.
4. Click on the Stop button, and then click on OK.
5. If prompted by UAC (User Account Control), select Continue.
Now restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Hope this information is helpful.

Thanks for that info.
I know what the culprit is, its mobsync.exe I can see that using procexp.exe when wmplayer.exe is in a crashed state (error popup displayed) I can see that the process that started wmplayer.exe is mobsync.exe.
What is causing wmplayer.exe to crash, quite frankly I don't care as I don't use it.
I will try disabling the Portable Device Enumerator Service - it will probably resolve my issue.
Is there any negative effect from disabling this?
ie Is there anything outside of wmplayer that I won't be now able to do because this service is disabled?

Hi Everyone,
Here's what I've tried:
From these threads: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistaperformance/thread/5d9f40d6-6414-4930-9c32-c1ef62b58115,
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistaprograms/thread/55aacc06-dcb9-4cba-ae91-fd79857a2b41/, & several others,
I've disabled the Portable Device Enumerator Service, which did nothing. When I try to go through the Control Panel to Network and Internet, there is no option for "offline files."
I have tried to access offline files several ways, one thread said it coult be found through IE and the Internet Options, but it couldn't. Another said to go through start button > msconfig, and another said to type "offline files" into the command line from the start button. Neither of those worked either. I have also tried to search for "offline" in Control Panel - it brings up nothing. I wonder if it actually exists.
Several threads recommend this link for tools to deal with the problem: http://reliancepc.com/menu/tips/mobsync/, but the links on that page go to 404 error pages.
Maybe a new mouse would solve the issue, as some threads suggest, but I don't believe that is actually what is causing it, at least not in my case. I read that this is a sync tool for removable storage media. But here's my problem, I don't want to synchronize my portable storage media. I have an SD card that I store almost everything on. Basically, any file that I might need if my PC dies is on that card. I don't need this sync'd, and the program is just stealing CPU resources that I really need elsewhere.
I also have the following attached: through my router, an HP C6280 printer; through USB ports: a Logitech mouse (btw, you gotta try their mice with the freespin technology - it's awsome), and a logitech keyboard.
I can't just remove the program because I have a smart phone that I sync regularly. What I need is a way to turn this program, along with wmplayer.exe (which mobsync.exe turns on) off when it is not needed. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeramee
