Question

Need help setting up Kodak 5500 AiO printer via the network.

I have a kodak 5500 AiO printer. I have vista on all of my computers (1 desktop and 3 laptops). I downloaded sp2 for vista on all the computers, after I downloaded sp2 on the desktop the mouse and keyboard froze, I had to uninstall sp2 to get it to work. Now the printer on my home network will not print or be discovered by my laptops. I can see the printer on the network from my laptops but I can't connect to it. The printer is on the desktop via a usb cable. I have deleted the printer drivers and reinstalled and downloaded the most recent software and drivers for the printer.  I need help.

Thanks,

Phil

Answer

Everyone,

This is what I had to do to get my printer working after Vista messed it up. You do the first two steps to the computer where your printer is connected. The last step you do to your laptops or what ever computer you want to connect to the main computer printer. I hope this helps.

Hey all,

We had this same problem..

We had to follow the procedure suggested by Drompa. . .

>>1) Share Permissions
>>1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS
>>2. Right click, Properties
>>3. Sharing tab
>>4. Advanced Sharing
>>5. Check "Share this folder"
>>6. Permissions
>>7. Grant everyone Full Control
>>
>>2) NTFS Permissions
>>1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\printers
>>2. Right click, Properties
>>3. Security tab
>>4. Edit
>>5. Add
>>6. Advanced
>>7. Find Now
>>8. Choose "NETWORK"
>>9. OK
>>10. Grant NETWORK Full Control

AND THEN we had to install as local printers, using the port trick. . .

1. Go to "Printers"
2. click "Add Printer"
3. "Add a Local Printer"
4. "Create a New Port"
5. use the "Local Port" option
6. at "Enter a Port Name" enter: "\\Computername\Printername"

And Hopefully that should do it!

Good Luck!

Credit to Drompa and otherdreams for helping me out.

Hi bobonuts,

Thank you for using Vista Support forum,

Did you follow this instructions to uninstall SP 2?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948465
Removing the prerelease version of SP2 The prerelease version of SP2 is time-limited software. You must remove the prerelease version of the service pack before you install the final version of the service pack. Also, this software will no longer operate after May 1, 2010. You must remove the prerelease version of SP2 before that date.

To remove the prerelease version of SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start
Collapse this imageExpand this image, copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:
    appwiz.cpl
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465), and then click Uninstall.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.
For more information about how to remove Windows Vista service packs, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
948537  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537/ ) How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step

Did you run the System Restore after uninstall SP 2?
Also try to reinstall printer driver with the latest driver.  Same goes for the wireless network adapter driver.

Check system for corruption by running the SFC scan and post the result back in your next reply

Running the System File Checker

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.     Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4.     You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5.     Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

…found no integrity violations

found corruption but repaired it

found corruption that it could not repair

6.     Please reply with the completion message that you received.

Looking forward to hear from you soon,

Kevin,

Sorry it took so long to respond but I had work. I looked through the vista downloads and I do not have vista sp2 installed. I did do a system restore to delete sp2. I deleted the printer driver and reinstalled the latest driver, i have deleted and reinstalled the wireless network adapter. I also ran the sfc scan and received this message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations". I hope this helped because I am totally dumbfounded.

Hi bobonuts,

How is the printer connect to the network? Is it through the router or is it shared from one of the computer?
What happen when you try to connect to it? Is there any error message?
I assumed that you already turn on everything in Network and Sharing Center, correct? Did you add permission to the printer for other users from laptops?
Double check these settings listed in this article, uninstall SP2 might reset alot of your settings.  Also try disable antivirus/firewall in the meantime to see if it will helps.

Kevin,

The printer is connect through the USB cable of the desktop, so it is shared from one computer. When I try to connect from the laptops I get an error code of 0x00000709. I have turned on everything in the network and sharing center except for the password part. I have added permission to the printer for other users to access the printer. I have disabled my firewall and still no luck. I can see the printer from my network on all the laptops I just can not connect to it. I don't know if this is important but I can't connect to the main hard drive on the desktop, I can connect to all my other drives that are connected to the desktop. This is the error code I receive when I try to connect to the main hard drive
0x80070005. Thanks for your help so far.

Phil

Phil,
The error you are getting trying to connect to the pritner is invalid printer name.  Have you deleted the printer from everything - the computer it is connected to and the other computers on the network?  If not, you need to delete it from the printers folder, remove all the drivers and software off each computer, reboot all of them, then reinstall the software and drivers, then the printer.

You might also try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility before you install anything else:

Gloria,

Thanks for that advice but still no luck. I removed the drivers from all the computers and followed the directions as above and no luck. I don't know what else to do. Like I said I am able to see the printer on my network but I am unable to connect.

Thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil,
I think your firewall may be getting in the way.

What are you using for a firewall?

Matt,

At this time I do not have any firewalls turned on. I have a built in firewall on my home router. I am connected to ATT U-verse. I have bitdefender 2009 total security. I have that firewall as well as the windows firewall turned off. I just did a factory reset on my router. I just can't figure this out.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,
Here is something else to try.  The error you are getting trying to connect to the printer is "invalid printer name".  So try renaming the printer and then see if the other computers can connect to it:

To rename a printer:

1.  Open Printers by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.

2.  Click the printer that you want to rename, and then click Rename this printer on the toolbar.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.  Next to the printer's icon, enter the new printer name.

If that does not work, try adding a new port and installing the printer on a new port.

Let us know if this helps or if you still need assistance.
Thank you,
