Hi Folks
I just installed SP2 and now when I start/reboot the computer the default gateway is missing. When I check the properties of the connection the IP address is correct but the default gateway is empty - it does not contain 0.0.0.0, there is nothing at all.
My computer (Vista Ultimate x86) and an XP Pro PC are connected to a router. I have turned off DHCP on the router and use a static IP Address for each computer. The XP machine is rarely used. I also have a VPN connection setup. When I first encountered this problem I deleted the VPN connection in case the PC was trying to use that to connect to the Internet. I later recreated it once I understood what the problem was.
Although I can reset the gateway, I do not want to have to do this every time I reboot.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this, please? I would also appreciate it if anyone can tell me how I can set the default gateway using a batch file run with administrative privileges. That would save me having to drill down through Control Panel etc etc each time my computer starts.

To fix your issue follow these steps:
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type
CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:
IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit
Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.
To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. This article
describes how to troubleshoot problems in Windows Vista by performing a clean boot. This article also describes how to start the Windows Installer service and how to reset the computer so that it starts as usual.
Note When you perform a clean boot, you may temporarily lose some functionality. When you start the computer as usual, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or you may experience the original behavior.
If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
a. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
b. Click Start Collapse this image Expand this image , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.
Collapse this image Expand this image If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue .
c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup , and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
d. On the Services

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points.
Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
e. Click OK , and then click Restart .
Step 2: Enable half of the services
a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
d. Click OK , and then click Restart .
Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns
If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the
Service list.
If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the
Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.
Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items
a. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1.
b. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
c. Click OK , and then click Restart .
Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns
If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item
list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.
If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the
Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.
Step 6: Resolve the problem
After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.
Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Next I turned the PC off, rebooted the router (I did not want to reset it at this stage - there is a lot of re-configuration) then reconnected.
After restarting the PC I reconfigured TCP/IP. Normally, Internet connectivity would return at this stage, but I was still unable to connect. So, I rebooted the PC again, and all the settings were retained.
My configuration is now as follows:

I have just one question, if I may.
I was expecting the adaptor to use an APIPA address 169.254.0.0/255.255.0.0. I've never seen APIPA in action before - is 169.254.0.0 the starting address and the last two octets are selected randomly? Is that why the address after the catalog reset is shown
as 169.254.65.149 and not 169.254.0.0?

I searched some threads and found these instructions fixed my default gateway issue. It seems to be an issue with Windows sp2. What you need to do is open regedit.exe and go to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ System/ Current Control Set/ Services/ Tcpip/
Parameters/ Interfaces. I opened the folder:
{1FBCF0F7-220D-47A9-BAF1-76A653D9746C}
Open the value "Default Gateway"
You may notice the default gateway number is on the second line of the window. All I had to do was delete the space above it, putting the gateway on the first line.
After I restarted the computer I the issue was fixed.

this last folder name ( in bold) is wrong, just search for "Default gateway". in my case, i found three folder in the last and found "Default gateway" in the third folder. the folders will be similar to the mentioned "in bold.
