My wireless keyboard and mouse randomly freeze or are very slow with keystrokes and mouse movements. Also occasionally get double letters! This occurs on my HP Pavillion with Vista Home Premium. The problem occurred with the original HP wireless keyboard/mouse
as well as a new Microssoft wireless keyboaard/mouse rcently purchased.
any suggestions?

Since you are having the same problem on two different brands of mice and keyboards, this appears to be mostly likely caused by wireless interference. What most people don't realize is that almost every consumer device today that is wireless runs on the same frequency, 2.4GHz. And with the proliferation of wireless devices in the home today, there is going to be some interference. The proximity of the devices to one another is an issue, but interference can be caused with devices several hundred feet apart. If you have a wireless router, wireless LAN adapter, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, and other wireless devices, they could be interfering with one another. I have seen interference caused by baby monitors, 2.4GHz cordless telephones, wireless security cameras, microwave ovens, wireless media devices, etc. To determine if interference is in fact the cause of this issue, plug in an old keyboard or mouse that is not wireless (borrow from a friend if you don't have one, or pick up one at a second hand store dirt cheap). Try it out for a little while and if you still have the same issue with a wired keyboard and mouse let us know and we will investigate further. But I highly suspect interference since you said it is random. I had a customer once that it took three months to figure out his new security camera on the outside of his house was causing his wireless Internet to not work, even though the camera was not turned on. It was plugged in, which was enough. So try that and let us know what you find out.
Here is an article that might have some helpful information for you to try, and includes information about wireless interference:
