Hello,
The Quick Launch toolbar is a section of your taskbar near the Start menu where you can add shortcuts to programs. The Quick Launch toolbar is located on the taskbar and is a convenient way to open programs. You can add or remove program icons on the Quick Launch toolbar so that you have easy access to the programs that you frequently use.
To add a program icon to the Quick Launch toolbar
•Click the icon of the program you want to add (you can find most program icons on the Start menu or the desktop), and then drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar
Refer to “Add or remove programs on the Quick Launch toolbar” http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Add-or-remove-programs-on-the-Quick-Launch-toolbar

I have similar problem. I tried this an there is no MSE all I see is OneCare. I use to have OneCare and I unistalled it, then installed MSE. The Icon stays around for a day or two then disappears. I click the program open and it tells me that it is protecting. But I really like to see the icon in the notification bar of the task bar. It allows others using my machine to see that it is running.
All three machines (windows xp and vista) that had the OneCare on it are doing the same thing. Any suggestions. I already uninstalled MSE and reinstalled a couple of times. It fix the problem for a few days and then the notification Icon disappears again.
Any suggestions,
Kim

hi kim,
please do not worry about this has this is a security feature of mse. as this "hide" of the icon prevents any remote hacker from accessing mse and disablling the program. your pc is still safe and protected. and any time you do want to access the program then click on the task bar/desktop icon.

How to make the Microsoft security essentials icon appear on the taskbar? The MSE icon is no where to be found when I try to customize the various items on the taskbar)
I do have the same problem. I'm using a Lenovo S10-2 netbook with XP Home edition SP3. Usually the MSE icon disappears after two (2) days from the date of installation.
These are the steps I tried:
1) - Under Control Panel, click Task Bar and Start Menu, under Taskbar/Notification area, click theCustomize key. It will open the Customize Notifications portal. Scroll down until you'll see theMSE icon. Change the Behavior to "always show". Click OK and Apply.
RESULT: It still does not show.
2) - Try to click the MSE desktop icon.
RESULT: No response.
3) - Press Start - All Programs - Microsoft Security Essentials
RESULT: No response.
However, when I check the Security Center under Control Panel, Virus Protection is ON and enabled.
Any suggestions?
Regards.

hi Thumthum,
sorry to hear your having problems accessing microsoft security centre. a couple of suggestions for you. 1.make sure to unistall all previous virus protection software (including mse) as this will conflict with the instilation of mse. 2. install malwarebytes and run this in safe mode at full scan level. 3. go to the download page and reinstall mse from "clean" (make sure you select the correct version for your os). 3. after install of mse go to settings and select the protection settings you want, update the virus protection, click on windows firewall setting (allow a program through windows firewall) and select both check boxes close window. then run a full scan.
NB, everytime you restart your pc/laptop mse will not show up on the icon system tray, this is normal as the program is still protecting you in the background. the easy way to get the icon back is just to click the program. but you wont need to as the idea is once you set mse thats it forget about it and have fun with you pc/laptop as mse is still protecting you.
hope this helps

Amazingly, the MSE is now on normal operation i.e. is back on the tray (during start-up) and I can access it without trouble. This happened the next day when I switched on my netbook and without haven't read your reply yet. However, I did install MALWAREBYTES Anti-malware a few moments ago (upon reading your post) and after doing some research about it. Since this is a highly recommended freeware indeed, I gave it a try. It did detect a "trojan" worm after a full scan! This might be the reason on why this on/off MSE scenario is happening.
You can check this site to learn more about Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol;1
Do take note that the free version of Malwarebytes has no real-time protection. You must manually scan every now and then just to make sure your computers are free from malware.
Moreover, I did check the reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials. You can read about it here: http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Security-Essentials/3000-2239_4-10969260.html?tag=mncol;1
Cheers!

hi Thumthum,
thanks for getting back to me, and i am very happy that i could help you in this matter.
i would like to point out to you though, that if you are installing any software it is always better to use the offical web site instead of a comunity one, for safety reasons. also if you perfer a real time scan which is boot capable then i would strongley recomend avast 5, to work along side mse as avast is a bit deeper than malwarebyes. which i suggested to you as it is light and would give you an idea of the integeratory of your os. now you know you have been comprimised i would unistall malwarebytres (to free up space) install avast 5 and do a full boot scan to make sure. also strongley recomend after scan is complete do a disk check and an sfc scan to repir any damage done from then trojons you have had. if you need any more help please just ask.
glad i could help
