Question

WindowsXP PCs freeze after Windows Update on November 11th. 2009.

Our two identical Dell Vostro 410 quad core PCs with WindowsXP SP3 installed are no longer working correctly after Windows update installed yesterday (Wednesday 11th. November. They will run in Safe Mode. However, in normal mode we get past the logon screen and through most of the startup process then the egg timer stays on for an unusually long time. If we leave the PC in this state for a further 5-10 minutes there is suddenly a loud beep and the computer freezes. A soft reboot is impossible at this stage so we have to power down the machine. Any idea what could be causing this problem and how to fix it?

Answer

Initial reports indicate that this affects Windows XP systems with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 series card.

Workaround: uninstall the update after booting in safe mode, upgrade ATI driver to the latest version (9.1, released 10/22/2009), then reapply MS09-065/969947

Try that, report back.

As a few PCs had the same symptom I first assumed a virus, but found as you did it was the recent MS Updates. My solution was to use System restore to restore to before the updates then turn Automatic Updates OFF to avoid them re installing.
I can confirm it was one of the updates as I allowed one working PC to install the updates again - it then demonstrated the system hanging as described in the original message.

Looking forward to a solution from Dell or MS.

Same problem with Dell Optiplex 755.  Everything freeze a minute after log on.  PC runs OK after System Restore.  The weird thing is that I have updated over 50 PCs and only one have this problem.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO card installed on my eMachines T5212 (WinXP SP2), and my machine did indeed break after the update. However, my PC will cut after loading halfway through the XP boot screen. Furthermore, a safe mode boot doesn't work either, since I had disabled System Restore while removing a trojan two weeks ago and had not turned it on since. I have no idea how to get around this since I cannot boot either in normal mode or in safe mode. Is there any way around this, like removing the card physically before boot?

It makes sense why the other Dell Optiplex 755 with ATI HD 2400 card took the updates without any problem.  I updated the ATI video driver a while back on Dell 755 machines that I maintain due to issues with Remote Desktop.  This one particular PC that is having the problem did not get an update because it was moved to a different location.  I'll update the video driver and try it again tomorrow and report back.  Thanks!

Never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update!  Intead, uninstall the update & reboot.  If that doesn't correct the problem, then try System Restore.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, so I hope I'm not in teh wrong place.  Just to let you know that my wife's HP Pavillion dv9500 Notebook running Vista SP2 had the exact same problem yesterday.  I was forced to do a system restore.  My wife was not impressed...
