Kelly,

If the System File Check tool found corruption and could not fix them, then we will do a repair install to correct this. First check if the second set of instructions (Resetting Windows Update Components) is successful.

Repair Installation:

You may reinstall your copy of Vista while keeping your files, settings, and programs by performing a repair installation or an upgrade installation.

1. Insert the Windows installation disc into your computer's DVD or CD drive. You must start Windows installation while running your existing version of Windows.

2. On the Install Windows page, click Install now.

3. On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. You will need an Internet connection to get installation updates.

4. On the Type your product key for activation page, we strongly recommend that you type your 25-character product key to help avoid problems during activation.

5. On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms.

6. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Upgrade to begin the upgrade. You might see a compatibility report.

7. Follow the instructions.

Note: If your installation disk does not include SP1, and you are updated to it, then you will have to uninstall it before performing an upgrade install. Start -> Control Panel -> Programs -> View installed updates, then select Service Pack for Microsoft Windows and click Uninstall.

It is always advisable to backup any and all important data before proceeding with any major changes to your system. Please see: Methods for backing up your files.

Always make sure you have the means to reinstall your programs, either through an install disk or having access to the installation files.

K M Boone,

First follow these steps for running The System File Checker tool:

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
  3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
  4. When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

Rami,

OK, I tried doing it the first way that you suggested, and it told me that some files were corrupt and it could not fix it. I have not tried it the other way yet.

Hey Rami,

I'd like to say thanks to you for helping me. The second option worked for me. After browsing the web on and off over the past month looking for some help, and it stressing me out at times... this actually fixed the problem I had, and now I can use MSN messenger again, and install the windows pack. :)

Thanks again.

ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT

Here are the steps which I took that in the end resulted in a successful windows update install.

  1. My system did not have the “pending.xml” (reported to be found in: c:\Windows\winsxs ) file that others said had to be deleted to restore proper installation for windows updates. So I proceeded with the following.

  2. I rebooted

  3. Then I ran the System Update Readiness tool KB947821 (Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x86.msulocated here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0435684B-8D12-4028-9CB0-B2903257F1FD&displaylang=en). It has at least two versions (both with the same KB name), one noted as v4 April 2009 and the other listed as v9 April 2010. The v9 file would not run on my system, however the v4 would.

  4. Next I ran the Microsoft FixIt utility (located here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058).

  5. Rebooted and looked at the log file CheckSUR.log (found in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS ) to see what was still being reported as errors.

  6. I then went through the registry and deleted any matches that I found. See the example below. The items in bold text is what I searched for within the registry. If a match was found, I deleted it.

  1. Without rebooting again, I searched for updates. I found one new update in addition to the one that was giving me problems. I selected all updates and proceeded to install. All updates completed successfully.

I tried starting the system file scan, and got a warning that it "will take some time".

Can anyone ballpark that for me?   I am apprehensive about starting a computer process that "will take some time".   Sometimes just "a few minutes" is bad.

I also hope I won't have to reinstall.  I've got several development tools that require multi-gigabyte image files to install, and I have only about 1.5M connection speed.   (Of course, I did try to save media copies of these installation files, but they have never worked when trying to reinstall.)

I have this issue on Windows 7 with the error code:800736B3 on the SP1.  I guess I fixed the error code ending in 405 so at least one issue is resolved.

I cannot install SP1 and I have tried the hotfix, the manual download, and the repair windows from my original install disc.  I do not see an upgrade option on my install disc since it was bought as the full Ultimate 64 version from Microsoft.

It downloads and then tells me the install fails.  When I do the downloaded SP1, it asks me if I want to install the hotfix which it does pretty quickly (7821 I think) and then does not proceed beyond that.
I have done the sfc /scannow as well/ and got the same "some errors could not be fixed".  The CBS log is way to long to post here.
I also tried the hotfix:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates and again the SP1 fails.
The failure says that "One or more of the system components that the service pack requires is missing."

Windows Update is able to install all other updates except the following:

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)
Installation date: ‎3/‎30/‎2012 9:17 PM

Seems a complete install from Upgrade was the final solution that worked.
I was afraid to click the "Install Windows" on my existing system, but it then proceeds to ask me if I want to check for updates and to an upgrade which is what I chose.  Everything is intact and I do not have to reload my program files but I did have 112 updates which, after 3 reboots, completed all successfully
Problem solved for my windows 7 Ultimate 64.
