Question

Windows wants to install updates for Office 2002 and Office XP and I have VISTA and Office 2007

I have read numerous threads and I don't seem to find the same problem I have.  I have been using Windows VISTA Home Premium (32 bit) for quite some time and since June 30, 2009 I have had difficulty downloading and installing Windows Updates.  I did install some updates today, but I continue to be asked to run/install updates for Office XP and Office 2002 (currently about 9).  I have been using VISTA and Office 2007 for some time.  I believe I have IE 7 and SP2.  I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer

Hello SKYisDlimit,

After my communication to you, I continued to research the Internet for help.  I was finally able to locate the file you suggested (Msmapi\1033) and did successfully get Office Pro 2003 Outlook running.  Thank you!!

I don't know if you are the one to ask the next question of or not, but I am still unable to re-install Microsoft Office Professional 2007.  I uninstalled that based on information I received from Santosh, and the had to re-install Office Pro 2003 (both of which were upgrades).  Now when I try to re-install 2007 (purchased in Feb 2007), I continue to get the following message:  "Setup can't find a version of Microsfot Office on your computer.  If Office is installed on a disk or network share, click the browse buttun to select the appropriate disk or share.  If you have a version of MO on a CD, place the CD in your CD-ROM drive, and then click the browse button to select the appropriate drive."

I have tried that several times with no success.  Obviously, I am running Office Pro 2003, so it is on the computer.  If you are unable to address this issue, please either direct it to the appropriate area or tell me whom I need to contact.  Again, thank you in advance for your help.  Needless to say, this is most frustrating!

Hi katydid2,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Windows Vista answers forum.

There might be few files or registry entries of Office XP and Office 2002 on the computer, hence the updates are available for Office XP and Office 2002. You will have to remove all the versions of Microsoft Office installed on the computer and then re-install Microsoft Office 2007 on the computer.

To uninstall all the versions of Microsoft Office completely from the computer download and run the “Windows Installer CleanUp” Utility”.

Link to download “Windows Installer CleanUp Utility”:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

For reference you may visit the following KB Article link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After uninstalling all versions of Microsoft Office from the computer, restart the computer and then re-install Microsoft Office 2007 and restart once again. Now check the Windows Updates websites and you should not be offered the Office XP and Office 2002 updates again.

Please let us know if it helps.

Thanks and Regards,
Santosh

Hello Santosh,

I have just accessed your response and thank you.  Before uninstalling all versions of Microsoft Office, I want to verify that after doing that, and then reinstalling Office 2007, that I will not lose any information, i.e., contacts, etc.  I will presume any saved documents, etc. will not be effected.  Sorry to bother you with an additional question, but my "yellow streak" up my back just got bigger.  :-)

Thanks again for your assistance--it's greatly appreciated.

Hi katydid2,

Thank you for replying us back.

The saved documents will not be affected, but the Outlook contacts will be lost. However you can always take a backup by following the steps as in the following KB Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070

I will suggest you to visit the following Microsoft Office Discussion groups to have a better idea on how to backup the Outlook contents.

Please let us know if it helps.

Hello Santosh,

I am just getting back to my issue and have made the Outlook backup and installed Windows Installer Cleanup utility.  However, when I accessed that program, it appeared that by using it, all programs would be deleted and I would have to reinstall all of them.  I believe I can select which programs to remove or clean up, with using the Cleanup utility, but no where did I see Office XP or Office 2002 as a choice.  It's very possible I am not understanding it.  :-(

I'm sorry to be such a problem, but I don't want to add to what is already a problem by making bad choices.  Thank you so much for your time and patience.  The Forums are absolutely great and all of you are to be commended for what you do.

Hi katydid2,

Thank you for replying us back.

I will suggest you to create a restore point and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove all Microsoft Office Products

To create a system restore point, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type systempropertiesprotection in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2. Wait for Windows to search for available disks and most recent restore points. In the System Properties dialog box, on the System Protection tab, click Create,

3. Type a name for the restore point and then click Create.

4. After the restore point has been created successfully, click OK two times.

After the restore point is created, run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and remove all the Microsoft Office Products those are listed, including Microsoft Office 2007, by selecting them individually from the “Installed Products” list and then click on Remove.

Restart the computer once and then re-install Microsoft Office 2007 on the computer.

You may also visit the following KB Article link for reference on “Setup May Remove Earlier Versions of Office” and follow the steps under “How to Remove Earlier Versions of Office”:

Please let us know if it helps.

Hello Santosh,

I created the restore point, and ran Windows Installer CleanUp Utility by checking Microsoft Office programsas you suggested.  Because Office Professional 2007 was an upgrade, and there was no earlier version on my PC, I had to locate Office Professional 2003 to reinstall that.  Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with Outlook.  I have done re-installs, repairs, etc. and continue to get the following message:  "Cannot sart Microsoft Office Outlook MAP132DLL is corrupt or the wrong version.  This could have been caused by installing other messaging software.  Please reinstall Outlook."

As stated earlier, I have re-installed a couple of times and continue to get that message.  I have not installed other messaging software.  I also just checked the status of Windows Updates and see there is only "1 important update, 35.0 MB - 343.9 MB"  (down from 7 updates suggested) and looking at available updates it indicated Windows VISTA Service Pack2 6/30/2009.  That doesn't mean that number of necessary updates won't change.

I will wait to hear back from you as to whether or not I install Office Professional 2007 regardless of the error concerning Outlook, or if there is something that needs to be done prior to that.  I might suggest that in the future someone with this issue be made aware of the fact that they will have to re-install an earlier version of Office before uninstalling the program.

For those of us with little aptitude, we rely on your knowledge and thank you for assisting us!   Again, I thank you in advance for your prompt response.

Hello Santosh,

I re-installed Office Professional 2003 (after several attempts and receiving the following message: * GPCore COM object, Process ID: 5108; *HP Digital Monitor, Process ID: 4920; and *setup exe, Process ID: 2968 at which time I clicked on "Ignore"), and finally received the message that it was a successful install (after restarting the computer).

I then attempted to re-install Office Professional 2007, and got a message that says something to the effect that no earlier version of Office can be found.  PLEASE!  Not only have I have purchased both of these programs and have run them successfully until today (and can access everything except Outlook as stated in the earlier posting.  At this time my original problem of not having Windows Updates install has gone from bad to worse.  Needless to say, it's most frustrating, and more so when I have spent a lot of money on not only these two versions of office, but all the others that came before them.

I am hopeful that you, or someone, will be able to resolve this problem so that I can get back to using my computer and programs to the fullest capabilities.  Thank you.

Hello Katydid2,

I was getting the same error message and found that the error was popping up because MSMapi32.dll file wass not removed from C:\Program Files\Common Files\System \Msmapi\LocaleID after uninstalling Microsoft Office 2007. This is what I did to resolve the issue.

1. Start Windows Explorer.

2. Locate and then open the following folder on your computer:
   C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi\1033

3. Right-click the MSMapi32.dll file, and then click Rename.

Note: The file (Msmapi32.dll) that you are renaming differs from the file (Mapi32.dll) that is mentioned in the error message.

4. Type Msmapi32.old, and then press ENTER to rename the file.

5. Start Outlook 2003.

Note: When you start Outlook 2003, the program will repair itself.

I got this from the following Microsoft link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926196/en-us
I think this should take care of the issue.
Cheers and Enjoy…..:)

Hello SKYisDlimit,

Following your instructions I do not have C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi\1033 on my computer.  That being said, I hope there is a next step that will work.  Beyond getting Outlook 2003 to work, my concern is getting Microsoft Office Professional 2007 re-installed.  As I stated earlier, even though I have re-installed MS OP 2003, when I attempt to install MS OP 2007 the popup message states it doesn't find an earlier version of MSO.

Thank you for your suggestion...I'm sorry it didn't work.  Perhaps you or someone will find a solution.
