Question

SOS - Windows updates problem - won't let me change my settings to turn on Automatic Updates

This is a nagging problem.  I have tried to get assistance and change a variety of things in my settings - changed my profile/access etc.  I need a little bit of help from someone.

Of note:  My laptop is a new HP (2 months), I recently upgraded to IE 8, I'm using Vista and it's a 32 bit system.  This laptop is owned by me and is for use personally and in a home based business (plus I am a college instructor).

P.S.  The HP Chat Support hasn't figured this out.

Can anyone help me?

Note:  I am trying to solve this problem tonight but I do have to step away for awhile.

It's probably easier than I think - - - but I just haven't had this problem before.

Answer

Justin,

The clean reboot didn't help.

Question:
I downloaded, a couple of weeks ago, a Registry Clean program from AdAware and ran it......that was probably the time that the Automatic Updates feature on Windows Update stopped working.

Is this the problem and how do I correct things now?  Do I need to reinstall my Windows Vista OS or something?

Please advise.

Thank you,
Rich

I also tried the following - which was from another forum - I turned off the Windows Update......deleted the file history and then turned it back on.

Unfortunately - - - I then rerun the Windows Update program, it told me that there were no updates.  Then trying to change the settings to turn on Automatic Updates failed again.

I still need help.

This is what I tried:

I suggest you try a Clean Boot and try updating there might be a service that you are running  that is stopping your computer from updating. Follow the link for Clean Boot Mode: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

That you can try to create a new account to test if it is a corrupt account: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/769495bf-035c-4764-a538-c9b05c22001e1033.mspx

Justin,

I resolved this.

I restored to a previous date.  It didn't work; however I Uninstalled the Windows SteadyState program.

I didn't realize that this program wasn't applicable to Vista.

Thank you,
