Please be aware:
I selected the "Windows Vista" forum, but that link leads to this forum. Please move my question to the correct place. Thank you!
========================================
I need to run Windows Update from
www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx instead of from Control Panel. Can I turn the "automatic" version off, or is there another way to get past it?
The problem is that my ISP restricts the size of the day's downloads, unless I download only during a certain time period overnight. I cannot afford to have my computer slow down to below dial-up speed during the day, and since I do not want to give Windows Update blanket approval for downloads and installation, I cannot restrict its timeframe.
Thank you in advance.

You've got a real mess on your hands.
PS: Despite what you may see at the top of this forum page or in the URL, this forum handles Windows Update issues for Win7, Vista, and WinXP. [What were they thinking?]
Greetings!
Yes, you can turn off Windows Update. Just click the Start button, Control Panel, Windows update. On the left pane, choose Change Settings. Under Important Updates, check Never check for updates. Also, under Recommended updates, check the box for Give me recommended updates the same way... Click OK twice.
Now you can manually run Windows Update and install patches on your schedule.
Cheers!
Barbara

That's the way it's supposed to work, but it doesn't mean it's going to update you automatically. Just uncheck the updates you don't want installed.
Barbara
Apparently you did not understand what I meant when I said, I want to run Windows Update online. I mean that I do not want the "automated" Vista version, but the online version that allows me to choose updates and block some of them.
Would someone please let me know whether there is a way to do that? Windows XP offered both methods for updates, and I would like to use the online version.

In other words, please don't post any more replies to this thread or this one.
Thank you.
Robear, this is a completely separate question. It will confuse me and others if it is lumped with the "Code 80070246 and vista_6000.16386.061101-2205-LRMAIK_EN.img" questions.
Please do not close this thread. Thank you.
I'm not a Moderator so I can't close this thread.
But I'll repost my last reply in your other thread:

My apologies for the confusion but your reference to vista_6000.16386.061101-2205-LRMAIK_EN.img in your first post suggested that Vista SP1 was not installed.
Speaking of which, can you tell me why you (downloaded and) are trying to run the Windows Automated Installation Kit?
The above notwithstanding, I'd think it'd be best for all concerned if I turned you over to Microsoft Support.
OPTION #1:
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338; and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with installing (or not being able to install) security updates.
Or you can...
Start a free Windows Update support incident email request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527
Customers who experience issues installing Microsoft security updates also can visit the following page for assistance: https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/
OPTION #2 (since you must get Vista SP2 installed anyway):
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista SP2 issues until August 30, 2010. Availability of chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034 & select appropriate category (i.e., Download issue).
Best of luck, Nicole!
