Lifecam.exe has stopped working.

I ran windows update and there was an update for my Microsoft vx 5000 software. It installed sucessfully, when I try to run Microsoft LifeCam it stops responding, the web cam works fine with msn messenger but unable to run the software for the webcam. I also ran checkdisk, sfc /scannow and also I uninstalled the software and downloaded from the web site ran as admin same issue. Everything was working fine till I ran Windows update and installed latest update for the webcam. Anyone else having same issue? Can anyone help me?

Answer

Hello all,

Thank you for taking the time to post.

This can be due to older PCs that have older graphics chipsets that do not fully support DirectX 9.0c (specifically Pixel Shader).  Such a system can fail when enumerating the effects.

A work around would be to move the files starting with “04Geometric_” from the following location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\Effects\Visual

I would recommend creating a folder in the ‘Effects’ folder titled ‘VisualBackup’

·         C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\Effects\’VisualBackup’

Once you have created that folder, move the files starting with “04Geometric_” into that new location.

Please let us know.

Thanks,

Same here with LifeCam Cinema. Windows Auto-Updated to lifecam.exe v3.20.259.00, breaking LifeCam app. Rolling back didn't fix it.

Hello, I'm having the exactly the same problem with my Microsoft vx 5000.

This is on Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit.

I am unsure of the driver # but it was the most up to date.  Since it stopped working I uninstalled the lifecam software reinstalled from the CD, uninstalled again and reinstalled version 3.0 from the website.  Same Issue as above, when I run lifecam software it freezes and says lifecam.exe has stopped working.  Currently the webcam works in skype but when I try to start a video call in live messenger it completely freezes up.

I have had no issues with my lifecam until the patch installed on 3/5/2010 via windows update.

I developed the same problem as well. Since the March 05, 2010 update, LifeCam.exe for the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema has stopped working completely, though it worked fine before the update. The webcam still works for Live Messenger and Yahoo! messenger as a basic webcam, though the advanced features are no longer available.

Me too. Ever since the March auto update (not sure what date. Today is March 9 2010, for reference) Microsoft LifeCam Cinema web cam stopped working. The update even wiped out my sound card drivers. Re-installed the ASUS P6T audio driver and now the sound works again, but did not help the web cam problem. I get the following error when I try and re-install the LifeCam software:

Microsoft LifeCam Setup
---------------------------
Setup cannot continue because an unexpected error has occurred.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953691
---------------------------
OK

I tried every step in the kb/953691 help site; none worked. It worked fine before the update. A previous restore may work, but the same error may happed again with the next auto-update.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
ASUS P6T motherboard
12GHZ DDR3 Ram
500 GB HD
Intel i7 CPU

Any help greatly appreciated.

Paid my $35 to MS and tried to create a support ticket on support.microsoft.com... got all the way to the final SUBMIT button and received message "Our system is not responding right now. We apologize for the inconvenience. Our technical team has been alerted and is working on resolving the problem..."

Seriously.

So I called MS when I got home last night. The LifeCam engineer said that since the camera itself works fine, my case must be forwarded to the Vista OS engineers. After another 20-min on hold, he apologized and said his manager was angry at him (I assume for running up their call-time stats) and he took my phone number and said I would be called back in 24- to 48-hrs.

Ho-hum.

In the spirit of Pa Bear's post, here are the details...

Running Vista Pro (32bit) on Lenovo T61 with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (15" screen 1680x1050, Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family, igdkmd32.sys v7.14.10.1437), SAV 10.2.0.322.

This is the update that broke LifeCam.exe:
Microsoft - Audio, Communication Device, Streaming Media and Broadcast - Microsoft LifeCam Cinema
Installation date: ‎3/‎7/‎2010 3:01 AM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Recommended
Microsoft Audio, Communication Device, Streaming Media and Broadcast software update released in January, 2010

Device Driver...
Microsoft LifeCam Cinema    Yes    IMAGE    3.20.240.0    1/27/2010    Microsoft    oem39.inf    Not Available    USB\VID_045E&PID_075D&MI_00\6&341F09B6&0&0000
Microsoft LifeCam Cinema.    Yes    MEDIA    6.3.6002.0    1/18/2010    Microsoft    oem40.inf    USBAUDIO.sys    USB\VID_045E&PID_075D&MI_02\6&341F09B6&0&0002

When LifeCam.exe starts, the blue activity light on the camera blinks once and then an application error message ("LifeCam.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.") appears.

Camera continues to function with third-party apps (that worked prior to camera install) however, I no longer have access to the camera control panel, so resolution cannot be modified.

System restore point was not available for state before auto-update. I have tried the following remedies:

1. Remove and reinstall software.
2. Remove software, remove device driver and reinstall.
3. Remove software, driver, and registry entries for "LifeCam".
4. Reinstall to earlier software version is not possible because install app automatically polls MS server for latest updates. Also, app will NOT install with network disabled.

Sooner or later, most Windows users learn (all-too-often the hard way) not to install any driver or third-party software updates offered by Windows Update. Get any needed updates from the device or computer manufacturer's download page only.

I have the same problem. The support couldn't help me. But my LiveCam.exe runs again. I downloaded the version for Windows7 althought I have Windows Vista. Now works the LifeCam Cinema again fine.

Hi Joe Schuch:

Excellent detailed post. Had similar problem long ago. I removed the Dell Integrated Webcam software and inmediately and without restart (to avoid Windows reinstalling the Dell , etc) installed the Microsoft LifeCamCinema (MWCC). That gave the oportunity for Microsoft to take over as the default webcam. After the restart Windows Messenger confirmed the default. Still the MLCC will only blink at startup but didn't open.  Solved the problem by having the camara microphone, with available sound PERMANENTLY.

My setup has four (4) microphones inputs:
1. integrated in the PC at the top of the display
2. in the microphone jack at the side
3. in my Logitech USB head set
4. in the MLCC

What need to be done is to have the WLCC microphone always enabled but with the sound level at cero(0), so I can use my headset and avoid feedback. This will make the WLCC open when you click the icon and have all avatars, HD, Settings, etc, always available.  Try it, for it will work.

Will provide specific micropones settings in another post if required'

Efrain
