KB977165 - Windows 7 - Now getting Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) after patch is applied.

Hi All,

After applying this patch Windows 7 was getting the BSOD shortly after booting to the desktop.  It was displaying the STOP error 0x0000007f.  The error being slightly different each time.  Previous to the patch I did NOT get the BSOD.

After uninstalling the KB977165 patch, and rebooting, the BSOD is no longer occuring.  Is MS reviewing the patch to determine the reason for the BSOD, it would seem that XP, Vista and 7 are now affected.

SM

EDIT:  Also note I am running the following software on that Machine (IBM Thinkpad T61)

Answer

well there is differently a conflicted between kaspersky 2010 CF2 and KB977165 on windows 32bit

i have recently uninstalled kaspersky, then updated with the KB977165, restarted (no issue)

I then installed kaspersky, updated kaspersky, and restarted - No boot issue at all

so only happens if kaspersky is install and running with update is installed then system rebooted.

I restored my windows 7 system to a restore point before the most recent updates, and it works fine.  The funny part about it is that if I look at the list of proposed updates (that when installed DO cause it to bluescreen), KB977165 is not among them.  Could this have been incorporated into the cumulative update that my computer wants to install?

I have now had this happen on multiple client machines running Windows 7.  Removal of KB977165 has resolved the issue on each of the machines, I have been able to use the Installed Updates menu, to do the patch removal.

Is your installation 32 or 64bit?

I run Win7 Ultimate 64bit and had random BSoD after the updates. It gave the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and in the dumps the processes where different every time, form tcpip, to ccc [ati panel] to ntkern. I had to use a system restore before the updates and the BSoD stopped.

The thing is that KB977165 was not issued for 64bit systems (I think). So we have KB971468, KB975560 and  KB978251 potentially causing problems. What were those supposed to address?

Mine is 64 bit.  I agree, it seems 165 was not issued for our systems.  I'm not entirely sure what the other patches were supposed to address, but they sure seem to have a lot of suck in them.   Is there any word from MS re: a resolution?  BTW, I'm running Ultimate as well.

I found this on the other thread
KB971468 - Vulnerabilities in SMB Server
KB975560 - security update for Quartz
KB975713 - Vulnerability in Windows Shell Handler
KB977165 - Windows kernel
KB977914 - security update for AVI filter
KB978037 - Vulnerability in Windows Client/Server Run-time Subsystem
KB978251 - Vulnerabilities in SMB client
KB978262 - Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits
KB978706 - MS paint

It doesn't seem that these updates could cause such instability... The main culprit 977165 made changes to the kernel, so that makes more sense.

I wonder if it was Asrock's IES that I had installed (and removed) that could have caused the instability. I'm still not sure if I want to try to install them again and see how it goes...

Don't know if this will help but here is what we found at our worksite.

Most of our users have WinXP and were unaffected by the patch.  But three of us were running Win 7 Ultimate x64 and all experienced BSoDs following the patch, with the PAGE_FAULT error.

After several wipes and fresh installs of the OS, we would always end up back at the same place, with the BSoD.

We determined that the culprit was not the patches themselves, but an interaction between the patches and our Kaspersky AV for Windows Work Station.

The three patches in question -KB971468, KB975560, and KB978251 did not seem to cause a problem when they were installed on a system and Kaspersky was not.  Kaspersky obviously did not cause a problem if it was installed on a system and the three patches were not.  But if the three patches were installed AND Kaseprsky was installed (using defaults during installation and fully updated afterwards)  - BSoD every time.

Since we want to keep our AV software running, we did a System Restore to a point before the patches were installed, then removed them and hid them under automatic updates.  To be safe we uninstalled and reinstalled Kaspersky as well.  So far it seems to have solved the problem - no BSoD so far today anyway.

Hope it helps.
