Error Code 80073712 - Can't Download "Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB960544)"

I've had this problem for a few months now.  The download gets to about 90% complete, then stops and I get the error.  I've now tried to get this update 40 or 50 times (mostly automatically).

The download progress bar starts at 90% complete.  My guess is that 90% of the file is already downloaded, so it starts where it finished last time.  However, I guess the 90% already downloaded is corrupted, so the download can't complete.  I don't know how to get rid of the partially downloaded file so I can start again.

No other upgrades are affected.  All upgrades for other software since then have completed successfully.

I've looked through on line help, and have done everything suggested, including spending 3 hours doing a check disk.  I'm at a loss as to what to do next.  Help!!!

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help me out here.

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. Method 1: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe)
  1. Download and run the System Update Readiness tool. This tool runs a one-time scan for inconsistencies that may prevent future servicing operations.

For more information about how to download and run the Checksur.exe tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
947821  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/ ) Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista
  2. Try to install updates again.
Note After you run the tool, the Checksur.log file is saved in the following location:
%systemroot%\Logs\CBS
In a default installation of Windows Vista, %systemroot% represents the Windows directory.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to Method 2. Method 2: Install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 If you have not yet installed Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), visit the Microsoft Download Center, and then download and install Service Pack 1. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all programs, and then click the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en)
Note Click the Download option on the download page, click Save, and then save the download to your desktop. When the download process is complete, click Run to install SP1.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Try to download updates again.
If you still cannot install updates, go to Method 3. Method 3: Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista When you perform a repair installation, this restores the current Windows Vista installation to the version on the installation DVD. This requires you to reinstall all updates that are not included in that version of Windows Vista.

To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, click Start, type <Drive>:\setup.exe in the Search box, and then click Setup in the programs list. Then, click Install Now.
  3. Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).
  4. Insert the product key if you are prompted for it.
  5. Click to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
  6. On the Which type of installation to you want screen, click Upgrade.
  7. When the installation is complete, restart the computer, and then try to install updates again.

That particular Error Code gives this response from MS:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310

Are you using Vista 32bit or 64bit?

That KB960544 appears to be for a 64bit System.

I'm progressing through the link microsoft support pagr (link above).

Step 1:  I have already obtained the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) on 17/02/2009.  This occured automatically after the first (KB960544) download failure the day before.  I presume this has run, but I'm not sure how to run it again, or to view the log file.  If anyone could help with this then that would be great.

Step 2: I definitely have Service Pack 1 Installed, so this is not the issue.

Step 3: Re-install Vista?  I am reluctant to do this unless there is no other option.

The above link containing the x86(32bit) update version was not in MS's search results yesterday! Only the 64bit update to download.

That is what threw me yesterday.

Try downloading it directly from the above link.

Thanks Michael.  I just tried that and had the same problem.  It downloads, it initializes, then the installation bar immediately jumps to 90%, stops at 90%, there is a pause for a minute or two, and I get a message that it wasn't installed.

Sorry that I can not be of more help. The way it is going is pointing to a reinstall, and hope for the best.

Good luck with it.
