Bascially it cannot fine the silverlight .MSI file that it may have placed on your C:\ dive as something like  c:\55ed60a22d9d6697e288efe76fcf\  or on the CD that originally installed it. directories like "c:\55ed60a22d9d6697e288efe76fcf\" just use up your C:\ and causes your PC to slow down and fail.

So Uninstall Silverlight, then reinstall it from http://silverlight.net/

Microsoft Update continues to show that Silverlight installation failed. Control Panel - Programs shows that Silverlight 3.0 40818.0 was automatically installed on 1-17-10. When I try to uninstall Silverlight I get this message: "Could not access network location"; and the uninstall doesn't!

KB979202 was released two days later on 19 January 2010. See my previous reply to this thread.

Just uninstall it and never look back. It is ridiculous anyway.

Hi,

Try to disable your AV, run Windows Update again... worked for me. Re-enable your AV.

Cheers

Silverlight will not uninstall via Add/Remove on the Windows 2003 Server that the update also wouldn't install on.  The reason is that it cannot see the installation source for the uninstallation instructions.  So I'm dammed if I do and dammed if I don't. ;-)   ...wondering how to best provide either an installation source or a work around for removal.

** solution found in someone's link (been awhile can't remember which one) was to use the Microsoft downloadable tool, Windows Installation Cleanup Utility.  Although old and not specifically intended for use on a server it works nevertheless to remove the Silverlight entry and allows then for a subsequent installation of the current version**

I have the exact same problem, says silverlight is there, cannot uninstall. I do not want to disable the automatic updates. Each time i turn on my computer it still wants to update this program. If someone could advise me how to correct this problem i would appreciate it.

Christa.

After getting so frustrated with this silverlight issue...I've finally found a solution, at least for my laptop.

1) I could not get it installed.  Failure, could not located needed files under "c:\3981503e3495612c9427" or something similar.

2) Extracting the .msi and other files manually to that location, still not installing.

3) After running that uninstall package utility provided by MS, restarting / re-install of silverlight, still failed installation.

Finally, I did a little registry look.  Opened up registry(after backup!) did a search for "silverlight.msi" and found it in the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / installer / products / D7314F9862C648A4DB8BE2A5B47BE100

I deleted that key, and also deleted all silverlight folders in programData and program files

restarted, started the silverlight.exe.   It installed with no problem and it works!  Finally.
