Corrupted Windows 7 Update File?

My daughter's Windows 7 laptop keeps hanging.  It appears that the problem is occurring when a Windows 7 update file is installing automatically in the background.  The file has already been downloaded and begins installation shortly after booting is complete.  How can I find and delete the update file that has been downloaded so that we can start the update process with a cleanly downloaded file?
