I had exactly the same problem you had.
I spent some time searching forum after forum, and here is what I found...

Ok, so I called tech support and this is what the guy and I did to get mine to work:
First download this: http://www.monstrmoose.com/download.php?f=H2VWin7Fix.exe
It's meant to fix windows 7 to work with Halo 2 but it did the trick for Viva Pinata.
After it's downloaded make sure to right click the file, go to Properties and then the Compatibility tab. At the bottom will be a check box for "Run this program as an administrator; check it, hit ok, the run the program. It should do it's thing and then end with a "fix complete, computer can run Halo now" statement.
Now it should pull up windows live when you run the game.
Hope that helps you!
After I followed the instructions, I additionally had to install the update "Games for Windows - LIVE v3.2" (I ran windows update to get it). I am not sure that is directly related to the fix.

Deleting the OEM files has been proven to solve this issue.
Follow these steps.
1. Enter CMD and type net stop cryptsvc (If this doesn't work, start your Command Prompt, from Accessories, using Rightclick --> Run as Administrator.)
2. Search for %systemroot%/inf in windows
3. Delete all OEM files found. Sort by searching the folder for oem*.*
4. Enter CMD again and type net start cryptsvc
5. Restart your PC.
6. Enjoy Viva pinata.
That definatly did not work.
plus, the second step only finds me .inf files. So I'm not sure what to delete at step 3?
any other suggestions? I could download it illegally, perhaps it would be possible to save with an illegal copy?
Also, I'm not sure why you need a windows live profile, it's not like Windows live will store and back up your save games....

I've tried various fixes around the Net and none work, including the above, the Halo2 exe fix, the deletion of various weirdly named folders file contents, etc.
We need a revised exe file so that it JUST WORKS immediately! Games for Windows works fine - I got Tinker from the marketplace and played that whilst signed in...and got achievements no problem, with Home Key working.
Any other ideas as to how to get this to work? I'm not pratting about with VMs or installing on an older XP machine....
this doesn't work on my new windows 7 PC.
any other suggestions?
Actually - I DID end up pratting about with VMs and older XP machines. VMs did not work, as the software seemed to really hate the virtual DVDROM they create. Older XP machines did not have powerful-enough gfx cards...
I'm trying one more time by removing g4wLive, installing under compatibility to see if that works. If not, then the only other solution is to find a laptop with Vista or XP that can handle the gfx, or dowgrade my laptop back to Vista. I'd then lose my ability to play Gears of War PC, which I could never get working under Vista!
Only solution I can offer you rhellner is to buy an Xbox 360 and get VP on there!
I now know why I hated PC gaming - the games may look better, but that's only if you get them to work in the first place. Consoles at least simply 'just work'.... :)
