Booting from Windows 8 Release Preview DVD - error code 0x0000005D

bstolt asked on

The screen is black with the following text in white:

Your PC needs to restart.

Please hold down the power button.

Error Code:  0x0000005D

Parameters:

0x030F0209

0x756E6547

0x49656E69

0x6C65746E

Installing the consumer preview had no problems.

If I boot into Windows 8 (Consumer Preview) and run the Release Preview setup from the DVD manually, I get the "Your CPU is not compatible" error message.  My machine does meet the requirements as far as I know:  P4 2.6 GHz, 1.75 GB of RAM.

To install Windows 8 Release Preview on your PC, the processor (CPU) must support the following features:  Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2.  Most CPUs have support for these features, so if you receive this error, it is likely because the NX feature is not enabled on your system.

To resolve this error, follow manufacturer guidelines to enable NX (“No eXecute bit”), or the equivalent XD (“eXecute Disabled”) feature, within the BIOS security settings.

If the BIOS setting for the NX support option is not available on your system, you may need to contact the manufacturer for updating the BIOS.  Note that some older processors may not contain these features and will be incompatible with Windows 8 Release Preview.

If you have an Intel CPU, look at  Intel Downloadcenter and download the  Intel® Processor Identification Utility. When you install and run it, on the tab CPUID Data it will tell you if you CPU supports the Execute Disable bit (XD, on AMD it is called NX). Mine doesn't :-(

Same problem.
First time i thought it may be the graphics card (integrated one, so not much powerful). But the data are exactly the same (even parameters)¡, so... it shouldn't

Testing on a NEC powermate, clean install on a ubuntu 12. Pentium IV, 1.2Gb RAM (as other computers at company's network). Consumer preview at least installed.

Spanish edition, i think, booting from USB.

I checked my BIOS settings, there is nothing about the "No Execute" bit.  However, I believe the P4 does have this capability.

I have the latest BIOS available for this CPU board.  So I am just out of luck?

Although this is an old processor / board that I use for testing purposes, it is frustrating that this latest release does not work when the consumer preview ran just fine.

I have the same problem with my Intel P4 (Northwood).
I haven't found out yet, if the CPU does support the NX-Bit. There's no hint in the BIOS (uptodate).
Some websites say, NX-Bit is supported in Prescott and later (Northwood is before Prescott).
Others say, all P4 do support NX-Bit. Developper- and Consumer-Preview worked flawlessly. I can't understand why Microsoft doesn't support this CPU. Or is this a Bug. I've already read the error also occurs on intel i3 CPUs...

Update:
My CPU has no NX-Bit support. Trying to launch the setup.exe from the "source" directory...

No didn't work.
Same problem after first reboot of setup.
I'm giving it up. I really hope MS will reconsider this decission.
It simply doesn't make sense. My CPU is absolutely capable of runnig windows 8.
I think it is my decission to use this security-feature (NX-Bit) or not...

Same error code on an old Toshiba 5205-S503 (2002), except the parameters are slightly different.

0x030F0207
0x756E6547
0x49656E69
0x6C65746E

Updated BIOS to v1.50 to no avail. This machine has a "legacy-free" bios, which means that bios can only be changed using the included HWSetup.exe from Toshiba. The setup program does not have any indication of an NX-bit (which I presume is the issue).
