Why won't my sound work on Windows 8?

Hello. I just installed Windows 8 on my Toshiba Satellite L305. It has a Realtek high definition sound card. Audio is not working at all. It isn't working with headphones either. I downloaded the Toshiba upgrade assistant, which was supposed to install all the drivers I need, but it doesn't work with my laptop for some reason. Then I went and found the driver for my sound card only. It installed on my computer, but still doesn't work. I am sure it is the right version. What can I do? I would like sound on my laptop. Sound worked perfectly on Windows 7. I don't want to have wasted $40

If the last reply didn't help you you can go to sound,audio,and video and go to drivers and then sound drivers. If your with me so far good. Then go to the sound drivers then update them (and that was free for me) so then if that doesn't work (you might not believe me on this but it really worked for my friend) delete all the sound drivers and restart the laptop then they'll all be back and the sound should work and if not are the speakers connected and are the speakers busted?

hi I really need help my pc is new I got it a few days ago  and now the sound wont work   I have everything plugged in and I tried restarting my pc and nplugging and replugging PLSS HELP
