Answer

I ran into the same problem and SOLVED it.

Background:

- Migration from Windows7 Pro-x32 to Windows 8 Pro-x32

Scenario:

- Win8 refused to associate certain audio/video file extensions (specifically flv, avi, mp3, mp4, m4v, mov, mpg, mpeg) with VideoLAN VLC media player while others (e.g. mkv) were associated.

Solution:

1. open regedit [I used > Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00]

2. navigate to > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

3. backup the FileExts folder (right-click > Export)... just to be safe

4. delete the extensions that refuse to associate with your program (right-click > Delete)

5. open: Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program

6. for each extension you just deleted in the registry: Choose it > click on: Change program... (grey button on the right) > choose your program

7. DONE! The files are associated immediately, no system restart required.

Good luck!

Let me know if this solved your issue.
