Windows update error 80070002 with log

So a while ago (a couple of months) I was having problems due to a bad stick of ram. I didn't realize this and kept trying to get windows to install updates (got as far as sp1). It crashed a lot while doing sp1 and never finished. After a crash I would get some windows update error (like the one above) and I would troubleshoot it for a while until it would let me install sp1 again. A combination of microsoft fixes and sfc/chkdsk usually worked.

Anyway I gave up for a while and just used windows without the newer updates. The ram got worse and I eventually replaced it. Everything on my computer is stable. Now I'm trying to fix Windows update again so I can properly install sp1 but the fixes I used previously don't work.

sfc /scannow
Gives an error if run from windows. I got it to run by booting from a windows dvd and deleting pending.xml before running it. It says there are no problems.

chkdsk
No corruption found

System update readiness tool: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858
Runs and says it installed successfully but doesn't fix anything.

Microsoft Automatic troubleshooter
Runs and says it fixes a bunch of things:
  1. Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x80070002
Possible issues may prevent Windows Update from keeping your system up to date. Fixed
Repair Windows Update Database Corruption Completed
  2. Windows Update components must be repaired
One or more Windows Update components are configured incorrectly. Fixed
    Repair Windows Update components Completed
  3. Problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Possible issues may prevent Windows Update from keeping your system up to date Fixed
    Reset BITS Completed
Still get the same error when I try to update

Deleting files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and \DataStore with windows update service turned off
There never seem to be any in download and deleting the ones in datastore doesn't do anything

---
Anyway, that's what I've tried. I've been searching forums for more fixes for too long now and so I'm posting here.

Here's a windows update log (I only copied one update attempt):

Hi,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Community!

After going through your post, it appears that you have an issue with installing Windows Updates. However, in order to guide you in the right direction; I will need some more information. Please help me by answering the questions mentioned below.

1.      Which antivirus are you using on your computer?

2.      Do you face this issue with all updates or a particular update?

3.      Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

4.      Do you have Windows 7 installation disc with you?

In-order to fix the Windows updates issue; I would suggest you to install the Windows updates by disabling the antivirus.

Disable anti-virus software.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you!

Currently I have no anti-virus installed. I had eset but I removed it a month or so ago.

The issue is with searching for updates. Every time I click "check or updates" it says "windows could not search for new updates" "An error occurred while checking for new updates for you computer" "Error(s) found: Code 80070002 Windows update encountered an unknown error."

If I manually try to install sp1 for example, it says "installation was not successful. a system error prevented...". Running the "System Update Readiness Tool" that the failed sp1 reccomends, installs KB947821 successfully but doesn't solve the problem.

I would try other updates (there may be a few that come before sp1 that I haven't installed) but I don't know which ones to try. My "update history" is empty for some reason.

edit:
forgot to answer the rest of the questions:
q3. I'm not sure what you mean by "any changes". The issue was caused by bad RAM. The ram is now fixed but the issue won't go away. I seem to have damaged some part of windows but sfc doesn't see the problem.
q4. Yes, I have a windows installation disc with me. It's one I downloaded and burned from the Microsoft DL center.

Hi,

I would suggest you to perform In-Place Upgrade on Windows 7, this will fix the issue

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

Note: Before you perform an in-place upgrade, you should be prepared for a worst case scenario that results in your existing data on your computer being deleted. This data includes personal data, settings, hardware driver information, and software programs. If a worst case scenario occurs, you may have to reinstall all programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or to other external storage devices before you perform an in-place upgrade.

Hope this helps.

Okay, sorry it's been a while, I finally got around to trying an in place install.

It starts out fine, but as soon as setup finishes "copying windows files" it pops up with the error "setup can't continue. restart the computer and restart setup. when prompted try getting the latest updates.".

I've tried it with and without setup checking for latest updates, same error.

Yeah I'm getting ready to just reinstall windows. It's a huge pain since I have very limited bandwidth but I haven't found any other solution.
Normally I'd be mad at Ms for something like this but I'm pretty sure this is because I ran my computer with bad ram for a month or two and tried to install sp1 several times during this period. That, on top of some probably destructive efforts to fix the windows installation... It's almost definitely my fault.

Anyway, if you find a fix, post it here.
