Windows 7 update hanging at 68%

My system is a Windows 7 64-bit Windows Home Premium desktop.  I had 16 updates to install and on the 12th, it hung up.  It was trying to install an update related to the malicious software tool.  It was stuck at 68% complete for hours.  I hit the button to cancel the update, but that did nothing.  So, I clicked on Start=>Shutdown and it said installing update 12 of 16 please don't turn off computer.  That sat for a couple of hours and got nowhere so I held down the power button to shut it down.  That was Thursday.  Today I turned on the computer and booted it into Safe mode.  It said that the Windows Update had failed and it was reverting.  After a few minutes it said was shutting down and it did an restarted this time in regular mode on it's own.  Again go the reverting message and then it came up successfully.  I am assuming it must have automatically restored my computer to the last restore point.  So, far everything seems to be working

OK.  My question is, how do I proceed from here?   How do I go about getting these updates installed?   I know that I've read  that sometimes this happens because the updates try to load out of sequence and there is a prerequisite update that needs done.  Do I try installing one at a time?  Should I try installing everything but the malicious software tool update, reboot, then try to install that?

Hi Sapphire,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thanks for posting the question.

As per the description provided, it looks like you are facing an issue while installing an update related to malicious software.

As a first step of troubleshooting, I would suggest you to check the updates history to see if there are any failed updates and let me know the description of those updates.

Check the update history: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/See-which-Windows-updates-are-installed

Try the following methods to install the failed updates.

Method 1:

Manually try installing the updates from Microsoft Download Center

a. Go to the Microsoft download website, type the "KB" number of the update into the download search box, and then click Go.

b. In the list of search results, click the Knowledge Base (KB) article link to go to the download page. If there's more than one listing, look for a link that goes to the Microsoft Download Center.

c. If there are multiple versions on the download page, find the appropriate one for your computer. Click the Download button, and save the update to your desktop.

d. When prompted, click Open to install the update.

Method 2:

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

Method 3:

I would recommend you to disable the security software and check.

Disable security software: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Note: If you have to temporarily disable security software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope the information provided is helpful.
