Wasim,
I also had the same problem this morning, that is KB2809289 failed with error code 80242016 on my Windows 7. I have WU set to prompt me, and rarely have a problem. Whenever I do, a simple retry has always worked. Before I try the fix you suggested above, I want to mention that I noticed that IE10 was offered in the same set of updates, but it wasn't checked. So I checked it to include it before doing the updates. IE10 did install and I'm using it now to type this. But KB2809289 failed. I'm now wondering if KB2809289 is unnecessary now that IE10 is installed. If you think I should still try to install KB2809289, should I just run the fix, or uninstall IE10 first, or something else?
p.s. I should also mention that I've checked for updates several times including after shutdown/restart and WU reports "Windows is up to date / There are no updates available for this computer". But the history shows KB2809289 failed (and it's the only instance of KB2809289 in the history).
Thanks.

Hi Wasim,
Did as you advised but unfortunately this did not resolve the issue.

Hi Jin,
The update was not checked in the list of updates in your case because the update applies only to Internet IE9 and you have IE 10 installed. So please refrain from running the fixit from my earlier post. Let me know if you have any questions.

Wasim,
I think you may have misunderstood my post above. At the time I was offered the updates I WAS running IE9, so KB2809289 WAS checked and I left it checked. IE10 was offered in the same set, but was unchecked. I checked IE10 and ran the updates. KB2809289 failed, but IE10 was installed.
I'd just like to know whether or not there is anything in KB2809289 that I need now that I have IE10 installed. As I added in the p.s. above, WU is now not offering any updates, even though the only instance of KB2809289 in my history indicates it failed.
